For decades, October 15th marked the official start of college basketball practice, it was a day everyone looked forward to. Some teams celebrated with Midnight Madness, while others kicked things off with early-morning breakfast and practice. If you’ve coached or played it’s a date you’re unlikely to forget. #collegebasketvall

Washington 5-plus turnovers and beats Purdue by 12 at Purdue. The Gophers simply weren’t prepared to play anyone last Saturday. Infuriating given what could have been.

Quality guy right here and it was an honor getting to broadcast his games. His building of the @BluejayMBB basketball program in the early 2000’s including a buzzer beater from Terry Taylor against @GatorsMBK when Billy”The Kid”Donavan in @MarchMadnessMBB epic! Blessings to Dana and his family. 🏀🎧🎙️
A visibly emotional Dana Altman during his opening statement. Had to stop multiple times due to holding back tears. He’s referencing a quote from Tom Izzo at the beginning. Ends by asking AD Rob Mullens: “Cover me here. Say something.”

This citizen from Edina said in less than four minutes last night all that needed to be said on the subject of youth/gun/gang violence in suburban Hennepin County. Let's have this go viral!

Heck of a win for Minnesota. Awesome scene. Little brown jug is a great rivalry trophy. Michigan is a total mess on offense.

Chris Johnson cannot speak anymore. He cannot walk on his own either. He talks through a device he controls with his eyes. His day starts with two hours of stretching. Seven bottles of medication. Physical therapy four or five times a week. A machine that bypasses his lungs and pumps every four seconds, all day, all night. His wife Brittany does almost all of it herself. "The hardest part is watching little pieces of him be torn away." He is 40 years old. In 2009 he ran for 2,006 yards, the sixth man in NFL history to do it. ALS was diagnosed in May 2025. He kept it private for more than a year. Then last Fourth of July weekend, about a week after he finally said it out loud on Good Morning America, he did something nobody expected a man in his condition to do. He started a challenge. He called it the CJ2K Ice Bucket Challenge, dumped the water on himself, and called out his old teammates. LenDale White went first. Then Pacman Jones. Then Marshawn Lynch. Then it got away from him in the best possible way. Vince Young. Adrian Peterson. Deion Sanders. Emmitt Smith. Thurman Thomas. LeSean McCoy. Pat McAfee. The entire Football Night in America crew did it live on NBC. Mike Tomlin wore a shirt for him on air during his broadcasting debut at the Hall of Fame Game. And his daughter challenged LeBron James. A man who can only move his eyes got the NFL to stand in a parking lot and pour ice water over its own head, and most of the people doing it had never played a down with him. Here is the part he will not soften. "Almost every neurologist brought up my football career." He has read the research showing former NFL players are roughly four times more likely to develop and die from ALS than other men. He knows what that probably means about where this came from. He has never once said he regrets playing. This month the Titans put him in their Ring of Honor. He was there with his family. He has 11,906 yards from scrimmage and he is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He has twin 14 year old sons, an 8 year old daughter named Honey, and a stepson, Lee, who is a junior at Florida A&M. He used to coach their teams. He used to take them on five mile walks. Lee said the thing that will stay with you. "Nothing has changed from what he tries to do. It's just physical." The man is still in there. The body quit on him. Asked what he wants now, Johnson typed it out with his eyes. "I just want more time with the people I love." If you want to do something, the ice bucket challenge is still running, and it goes to ALS research. For more stories like this, follow us on any platform @thesportsontap

This going to to be an unpopular opinion. Most people think the college basketball and football became so popular because of the athletes. Wrong. Most of the fan base comes from a bond through the school student body, alumni, and local community. NCAA through television expanded that brand nationally. But you coukd replace all D1 athletes with junior college players and prominent schools would still be selling out arenas If the athletes were the key market, then all they needed to do was go to the G league of minor league basketball and see how many fans would show.

Josh Allen reveals he had zero scholarship offers coming out of high school so he sent 1,000 emails with his highlights attached to every coach in the country, only two responded “The email said something like, Hey, I’m Josh Allen. I’m 6’5”, 220 pounds. I feel like I’d be a great fit for your program. Here’s my Hudl. These are my stats… I literally just went copy, paste, copy, paste and sent it to every single coach I could find an email for.” “I played in a small town called Firebaugh, California. I had zero offers out of high school. I had no preferred walk-ons. A couple Division III schools were trying to give me academic scholarships so I could go play there, but I didn’t want to make my parents pay for me to go somewhere.” “So I went the junior college route. I felt like I was good enough to play, which is obviously why I kept going. I wanted to go to junior college, earn a scholarship and kind of pay my family back for everything they had done for me.” “I also played football, basketball and baseball. I was a three-sport guy, so I didn’t spend my summers going around to every quarterback camp. I got the chance to play different sports, feel different emotions, meet different types of people and learn how to deal with all of it.” “I think that’s something a lot of kids need to continue doing, play more sports. Every sport teaches you something that you can ultimately use later in life.”

By year 10 Ferentz and Alvarez weren’t getting routed by every NC P4 team they played. Sorry PJ isn’t on that level and I hope today is finally the wake up call
