I’ve had other athletes ask to join the cross country team as well. Only to not know that they have to be at Practices and Meets 😂🤷🏾♂️
I have apparently developed another controversial coaching opinion.
If you join the cross country team, the cross country meets are mandatory.
I know.
Pretty extreme stuff.
And if there is a club soccer game scheduled at the same time, we are still going to expect you to be at the XC meet.
Apparently this requires explanation now.
What surprises me more is the outrage this generates.
"You mean they HAVE to go?"
Yes.
That's how being on a team works.
We practice so we can compete.
The meets aren't optional bonus content you unlock if nothing better shows up on the family calendar.
I didn't realize "athletes are expected to attend competitions" had become one of my hottest coaching takes.
But here we are.

What does being “Coachable” look like?
- Eye contact
- Good body language
- Nodding when listening
- Growth mindset
- Seek feedback
- No excuses
- Leave ego at the door
- Accept criticism
Being coachable isn't knowing it all.
It's being willing to learn it all.
Better treat these offers like a going out of business sale lol. the best items get picked up first. By the time you come back, there may not be much left. If you wait too long to make a decision, the fewer options and offers you'll likely have available.
The longer these high schoolers hold out to take an offer because they’re listening to others, the harder it’s going to be for them. This transfer portal is MOVING and Admissions Departments are not waiting 😂
HS/AAU Track Coaches‼️Stop telling these athletes “you can get them a better deal” or “wait later after a few summer meets to sign somewhere” or my favorite “you can get them faster this summer for a full ride”
It’s not about where YOU want them to go! It’s about where they feel valued and where they feel they fit in at academically and athletically. Stop gassing these kids and their parents up just to pay yourself on the back.
