Congratulations!
The opportunity to share my new book, Mastering the PIVOT: 5 Steps for an Epic Comeback, has been a tremendous joy.
This shipment is headed to a college campus, where student-athletes and staff will use it as their team book this year.
I can’t adequately put into words what that text message meant to me!
Why does this book make sense for a team?
Because life is filled with moments that require us to pivot—some we choose, and some that choose us.
This book is filled with stories of navigating setbacks, uncertainty, and change, along with reflection pages at the end of each chapter to make it personal.
Here’s one:
Think of your most recent setback. Observe the emotions it brings up. Now pause and reflect objectively. What did you learn from that experience that you can apply to the future?
My hope is that Mastering the PIVOT isn’t just something you read.
It’s something you reflect on, talk about, and use.

Talent can get a quarterback on the field.
Understanding defenses is what helps him stay successful.
@RussMartinFB1 explains why coverage recognition, pressure identification, and knowing the key read are what separate talented quarterbacks from consistently effective ones.

Drew Brees believes he would not have made the hall of fame if it weren't for a film session in 2003 where Marty Schottenheimer told him to stop making excuses
“I’ll never forget a film session in 2003. I was coming off a tough game. As we watched the tape together, Coach asked me the question…”
“‘Hey, why didn’t you throw to this receiver?’ ‘He was wide open.’ My response was… ‘I couldn’t see him.’ The tape paused. There was a moment of silence. Coach glared at me and said… It’s your job to see.’”
“You reach a point in your career when you stop making excuses. It’s usually a moment or an event where you flip a switch. Or make a very conscious decision. And it becomes part of your being. Coach was right.”
“And never again would those words or thoughts come out of my mouth. I would need to find a way to play the game a little bit different. Even if it was in a way that had not been done before.”
Exactly! 👍🏼
Marcus Freeman shares why "leading by example" isn't enough.
"We don't love leaders by example. Because leaders by example are guys that do what they're told to do, they do everything they're asked, right?"
"But they don't say things when their teammates aren't reaching the standard. We can't have that."
Real leadership isn't just performing at the standard. It's protecting the standard.
"We need more leaders. Guys that are willing to hold their teammates accountable because it's gonna make your teammate better."
Accountability isn't about being hard on people. It's about caring enough to not let them settle.
"I wanna make everybody in our organization the best they possibly can be. So if I let you cut corners or I don't say something to you when you're falling under the standard, then I'm not helping push you to the best you can be."
Leading by example is the baseline. Leading with accountability is the standard.
