RIP to the incredible Skip Bertman
My favorite speech of his:
The importance of “All-In”

Consistency is showing up no matter how you feel, no matter how yesterday went, no matter the score.
It is showing up because you made a commitment to yourself, to the team, to the process.
Consistency is a superpower.
Consistency is a choice.

The best athletes don’t become comfortable because games get easier. They become comfortable because they’ve practiced being uncomfortable. Hard practices. Game-like decisions. Contact. Fatigue. Pressure. Mistakes. Adversity. You prepare for chaos so chaos doesn’t surprise you.

My favorite line from Atomic Habits has been living in my head rent-free:
“It doesn’t make sense to continue wanting something if you’re not willing to do what it takes to get it. If you don’t want to live the lifestyle, then release yourself from the desire. To crave the result but not the process is to guarantee disappointment.”

Kobe Bryant once said:
“Everyone wants to be a beast. Everyone wants to be the best. But very few people are willing to do what it actually takes. Because what it takes is boring. It is waking up at 4:00 AM. It is shooting the same shot a thousand times. It is watching the film when you are tired. People fall in love with the result, but they hate the process. You have to fall in love with the boredom. You have to fall in love with the repetition.
If you can find joy in the mundane work that no one else sees, the lights will eventually shine on you.”
Let’s Go!

Bryce Harper says constantly hammering young players makes them less likely to deliver when the team needs them most:
“I got a different style of the game. Old school, hard nosed, veteran mentality.”
“For me, I don’t care who you are. Where you come from. What you did prior with another team. When you come into our clubhouse, I want you to feel like you’re at home.”
“I want you to feel like you’re family.”
“A young guy coming up from the minor leagues, If you just hammer him all the time and don’t show him any love. How do you know, in any big spot or any big situation, that you’re going to get the best out of him?”
“He’s going to be sitting there going, ‘They hate me.’ ‘They don’t like me.’ I don’t want that.”
“I want guys to enjoy the big leagues. It goes quick. He could be in the big leagues for four days. And that’s all he gets. And his only memory is his team getting on him.”
“I just want guys to be comfortable. If I feel like I need to speak, I'll speak.”
