Honoured to have been able to write for the Broadbent Institute about the working-class movement my ancestor, William Coaker, led and the lessons we can take from it today to building workers power & fighting the far-right.
"The transformative program of the FPU heightened economic power and instilled a community pride in towns across Newfoundland [...] inspiring hope for a better future and way of life for Newfoundland’s working-class fishermen." – @CoakerDavid

No endorsement from the Toronto Star is which telling about how it feels about Mayor Chow and her record.
There’s always an element of the unknown with change. But the incumbent is well known, 40 years in public office, and the Star is saying it’s time for a change

The Toronto Star has endorsed Olivia Chow's opponent in every race for mayor she's entered. Until now. Even the paper's wealthy conservative private equity ownership did not endorse Bradford.
Huge statement for the Toronto Star to not endorse the sitting Mayor.
When that paper has seen 3 1/2 years of Olivia Chow, & simply cannot advocate for 4 more of them - it’s quite an indictment.
GO VOTE MONDAY.

They're not evening hiding it anymore. He literally says "Because 2 Israelis were killed, we will destroy a neighborhood and replacing its residents with Israelis." Fuck off with standing by at olive harvest, either call for the total economic isolation of Israel or gtfo

I’d be a little more sympathetic to these cloying rejections of “violence” from liberals if they dropped comparable 300 word statements decrying it every time an Israeli murders two Palestinians.
But they don’t, of course. That would mean 10 statements a day. And there’s the rub
I’m grieving the deaths of the two Israeli soldiers killed in Hebron today, and praying for the full & speedy recovery of those who were injured.
I’ve spoken out loudly this week against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, which imposes violence on a daily basis, and I will continue to do so. But violence is not the path to ending it — or to achieving safety, freedom, and peace for both Palestinians and Israelis.
And neither is collective punishment or ethnic cleansing of an entire neighborhood, or punishing millions of people for the criminal act of two, which Netanyahu has promised to enact in response.
I’ve seen a lot this week and I’ll have more to say about in the coming days (I’m on my way home shortly). There is a path to ending this excruciating cycle of violence. It starts by insisting that every life is sacred, that everyone is created in God’s image.
For now: Shabbat Shalom, to everyone who believes in the hard work of making peace & justice a reality, for everyone.

It takes an immense amount of cognitive dissonance to condemn the Israeli police and military for arresting you personally on one hand and then to mourn them when they face armed resistance

One of the most unpleasant things about interviewing hardcore Bolsonaristas is how they constantly refer to Lula as nove dedos, or sometimes in English just “nine-y”. It’s gross. Lula just called him out on it in debate & the streets around my house are roaring with approval.

Kaitlan Collins: “Do you think undocumented immigrants should have access to federally funded healthcare?”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY): “I believe personally that healthcare is a human right. I believe that every person should be able to go to the doctor.”
Kaitlan Collins: “But if you could choose, do you believe [the law should be changed, allowing illegal aliens to have free healthcare]?”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY): “Pardon?… I believe in a single-payer healthcare system. Where if you go in and need a doctor, you can get the medical attention you need.”

It isn’t widely commented upon enough in the Anglophone world that the inclusion of the PS in Mélenchon’s ‘New Popular Front’ & the favourable candidate allocations made to them rescued that party from total electoral oblivion in 2024.
