If you are into the ideas of David Deutsch or Karl Popper, or are interested in the interplay of creativity with criticism, you might enjoy this talk I gave about a month ago at "Conjecture Conference Oxford 2026".
The natural tendency for indiscriminate vibe coding is the generation of Jenga tower code. To prevent complexity catastrophe on complex projects, nothing beats the ability to think well. That has not changed.

«Low resolution 3D printed vase»
It's an octagon that's been linearly extruded upwards with a bit of rotation every few millimeters. Each "layer" of the vase is scaled (width-wise) based on a sine wave.

Coercion is an act of interference, while domination is a status of subjugation. You can be lucky enough to avoid coercion under a benevolent master, but the mere existence of that master's arbitrary power strips away your liberty. If for no other reason than to fact that to be in the condition of a slave is to become slavish.
In Quentin Skinner's own words: "A subject living under an absolute power will inevitably behave slavishly, even if there were no overt coercion from the master; he must constantly accommodate his thoughts, speech, and conduct to the goodwill of his ruler."
This is an important article. I recommend people read it.
There are many great lines in it, and this is one of them:
"This is a different kind of demand for freedom. Not merely freedom from coercion, but freedom to participate in the expanding possibilities of economic life."
This makes me think of the great British intellectual historian Quentin Skinner, who gives many great lectures and write several excellent books on how there are different conceptions of freedom beyond the freedom from coercion, and puts them in a genealogy.
Skinner argues that we need to recover an ancient form of liberty, namely 'neo-roman', aka 'republican freedom', which is based on the conception that freedom is freedom from domination, which is the condition of not being subject to the arbitrary or uncontrolled power of another person or agency, even if that power is not actively being exercised.
Neo-republican liberty is a political theory that defines freedom primarily as non-domination—the condition of not being subject to the arbitrary or uncontrolled power of another person or agency, even if that power is not actively being exercised.
___
Core Principles
Freedom as Non-Domination: You are unfree if someone has the capacity to arbitrarily interfere in your life (such as a tyrannical government), regardless of whether they choose to use that power.
Contrast with Liberal Non-Interference: It challenges Isaiah Berlin’s classic liberal view of "negative liberty" as mere non-interference. Neo-republicans argue that a benevolent master who chooses not to interfere still leaves the subject unfree because the master could interfere at any time.
Role of Law and State Intervention: Unlike libertarians who view all state laws as a restriction on freedom, neo-republicans argue that well-designed, non-arbitrary laws actually protect freedom by preventing private or systemic domination.
Active Citizenship (Civic Virtue): Preserving non-domination requires citizens to actively participate in public life, hold institutions accountable, and maintain a mixed constitution with checks and balances.
The Figure of the Slave: Skinner uses the master-slave dynamic as his primary analytical tool to show that dependence, not actual interference, is the root of unfreedom.
The Problem of Dependancy: This focuses on the core argument that relying on the arbitrary goodwill of another person is inherently incompatible with liberty.
The Benevolent Master Dilemma: This highlights the specific thought experiment neo-republicans use: a slave with a kind, hands-off master is still a slave.
Condition vs. Action: This emphasizes that liberty is about your secure legal and social status (your condition), not just whether you are currently being stopped from doing what you want (an action).
___
Conclusion:
In the age of AI, Skinner’s neo-Roman framework aligns perfectly with the pursuit of individual sovereignty against a new form of institutional gatekeeping: cognitive mercantilism. The true threat to liberty today comes from the mercantilist urge of regulatory cartels and credentialed custodians who treat intelligence as a scarce, dangerous resource that must be hoarded and heavily restricted for the public's "own good". To a classical Roman mind, an independent citizen must possess the unforced capability to act; relying on the constant permission or arbitrary guardrails of an institutional patron reduces a citizen to a mere client or dependent. True libertas in the algorithmic era rejects both collective control and central management. Instead, it demands a robust framework of open access and individual property rights, ensuring that every citizen has the secure legal right to command and deploy their own digital leverage. By treating AI as a tool for personal virtus, individuals can freely build and participate in an expanding frontier of cognitive abundance, entirely secure from the arbitrary intervention of any central authority.
"The cognitive capitalist sees the possibility of an almost limitless expansion of demand, and a world full of minds whose potential has barely begun to be explored."

For those that want a philosophical argument for why we must accelerate, I highly recommend this short talk by David Deutsch.

It does not seem like pacing or pausing can work.
The only practical path is significantly accelerating. We must be so far ahead as a nation on both capabilities and alignment that by the time others catch up, our version of super intelligence can defend us.
One reason sweeping your systems isn’t enough for vulnerabilities right now is because hardly anyone will also sweep every single package and the packages inside those packages.
Are you really going to sweep all of Python? Ubuntu? Every module?
Shouldn’t all these organizations had access to the best cyber models ahead of time?
Well it doesn’t matter. These hackers are using frontier harnesses, tools, and multiple models (open and closed) to get frontier exploit finding tools.
We should’ve to accelerated building 0 day tooling to defend ourselves.

The left has been against space for a long time. Perhaps it's accelerating, but it's been high for decades. More recently, during the Biden administration, Hollywood made movies which essentially said that the men that go into space are not heroes, but emotionally stunted.

It was. So was First Man. It's technically a marvel. Everything about the physical world in that movie is extraordinary. But the emotional heart of the story is the protagonist is an emotional cripple who harms his wife with his stoicism and professional focus.
That said, Astra is even worse. We're only going into space because of daddy issues!
Coordination does not require communication between individuals, only interaction through a shared environment.
In software architecture, isolating the inevitable ugliness is a form of beauty. Perhaps applicable to life.
