On the night of October 22, 2015, Sergeant Major Thomas Patrick Payne entered a burning prison compound while others were trying to escape. After enlisting in the wake of the September 11 attacks, Payne earned his place in the 75th Ranger Regiment and later joined Delta Force, serving on some of the most dangerous counterterrorism missions of the post-9/11 era. Years of discipline, repetition, and relentless training had prepared him for moments like this. But no amount of training could erase the danger inside the compound. Enemy fighters were entrenched, gunfire echoed through the halls, and thick smoke filled the building as flames spread from cell to cell. Intelligence indicated that the prisoners inside faced imminent execution. Every second mattered. Payne's courage and determination during the October 2015 hostage-rescue mission in Iraq would later earn him the Medal of Honor.
