Based on dozens of interviews with Syria’s secretive Uyghur community, @EmilyZFeng provides the most comprehensive account to date of those who left their home in Xinjiang, fleeing an oppressive Chinese state, to organise, arm themselves and prepare for an eventual return. It is a compelling read because, for once, Syria’s Uyghurs are doing much of the talking themselves.
Beyond this wealth of first-hand accounts, the book leaves crucial questions about access unanswered and says little about the arrangements between the Uyghurs and their long-standing allies in HTS, but it certainly provides the material to start asking them.

I wrote earlier this month on LitHub about the complexities of reporting in Syria, as a Chinese American reporter.
“I was later to find out…that their antipathy and hostility was not towards Chinese people but to the government of China.”

Thank you to everyone who came out to JF Books last night for @EmilyZFeng’s talk on Our Hearts Burned for Home.
It’s a story most people have never heard. Beijing’s surveillance and cultural erasure in Xinjiang pushed thousands of Uyghurs into exile, and some of them ended up on the front lines of Syria’s civil war, where they helped bring down Assad. Emily built the book on rare interviews with the fighters and their families. It’s not an easy read, but it’s an important one.

How did large numbers of Uyghurs come to leave western China and fight in Syria's civil war?
@EmilyZFeng has reported on Xinjiang issues since 2017. In her latest book, she interviews the Uyghur fighters far from home. Read the full Q&A: buff.ly/0PjcuTF
