This week we learned that The Columbian has filed a representation petition with the National Labor Relations Board, seeking a new election in which employees will vote on whether to keep union representation. We condemn this shameful effort by management to bust our union.

This bleak outcome is a sad testament to the Campbell family鈥檚 nihilistic determination to crush the union at any cost rather than listen to the concerns of its employees.

We will overcome this challenge just as we鈥檝e overcome everything else The Columbian has thrown at us, and we will keep returning to the bargaining table for as long as it takes to make the company understand that it can鈥檛 bully its way out of its obligations to its staff.

You could say it鈥檚 a left-hand-doesn鈥檛-know-what-the-right-is-doing situation, except that it鈥檚 the same people; the newsroom managers who refuse to consider individual raises and demand that the issue be dealt with at the bargaining table... (8/9)
