The fossil fuel industry is pushing legislation that would ban local governments from working to eliminate greenhouse gas pollution.
Today at the ALEC annual meeting, a committee co-chaired by the American Gas Association will push state legislators to prohibit policies that pursue "science-based" and "100% clean energy" targets, among others.
Florida has already passed similar legislation and now the fossil fuel industry is trying to replicate these laws across the country.
As we feel the impacts of fires, floods, and heatwaves made worse by the climate crisis, we can't let special interests hack our democracy. Be on the lookout for this legislation in your state and speak out against it where these policies are introduced.

Democracy is not a spectator sport. It requires active engagement.
Today, I was honored to champion @SenBenAllen’s bill, SB 1301, to stop insurance companies from dropping policyholders without notice and sufficient opportunity to cure. SB 1301 passed out of the CA Assembly Insurance Committee 💪! On to the Appropriations Committee and then @CAgovernor’s desk.
Prior to the LA fires, insurers cancelled or nonrenewed policies of numerous residents without advance notice or explanation, and without providing any opportunity to remediate any conditions that might have been the basis for the nonrenewal. As a result, folks were forced onto the CA FAIR Plan (supposedly, the insurer of last resort), with insufficient coverage. Our town experienced it first-hand, but this is an issue of critical importance to every CA resident.
We are one major step closer toward ending unfair nonrewals in California. Thank you, Senator Allen, @ConsumerWD and everyone else who joined in this effort! – at Sacramento, CA

For consumers, the waning availability and affordability of home insurance is a genuine crisis.
For insurers, on the other hand, climate breakdown presents a short-term opportunity to maximize profits.

It's important to note that "pricing climate risk" does not mitigate climate risk.
Preventing, mitigating, and responding to ⬆️ disasters will require collective interventions including decarbonization, adaptive planning, and resilient infrastructure.

Insurers are profiting from a crisis they helped create.
They continue to underwrite & invest in fossil fuels, the leading cause of climate chaos.
⬆️extreme weather is giving the industry cover to offload risk & inflate prices across the board.

Insurers are doing the following more often & in more places: halting new sales, nonrenewing policies, hiking rates, denying/delaying claim payouts, & shortchanging people.
"Surplus line" providers—the less-regulated carriers filling new voids—are esp. likely to abuse consumers.

NEW: Despite mounting climate damages, home insurers are still raking in record profits by 1) abandoning people in higher risk areas and 2) hiking premiums nationwide.
1 = ⬇️ liabilities and 2 = ⬆️ $ to invest.
