In 2009, JoJo asked a court to free her from her label, Blackground, and pay her $500,000. When the label finally let her go in 2013, she got nothing.
In the video below, she tells the story herself. "Blackground owned my voice and name and likeness."
She signed with Blackground at 12. The label bought her mom a car and got them an apartment. "They felt like family to us." Then it moved them to New Jersey, where, she says, "the child labor laws are easier to get around."
At 13, she had a No. 1 hit. Then the label lost its distribution and stopped releasing her music. At 18, she says, it sent her to a nutritionist: 500 calories a day and appetite-killing injections. "Maybe then they'll put out an album."
Her lawyers then found a New York law. "You can't keep a minor in a personal service contract for more than seven years." She sued in July 2013. While the case went on, "I wasn't allowed to make money from putting out music."
Blackground settled in December 2013. "I didn't get any money. I didn't get any damages." A month later she signed with Atlantic. She told Time she would spend years paying off her lawyers.
Her first two albums disappeared from streaming. "It made me feel like my story is being erased." In 2018, she re-recorded both with her own money. In 2021, Blackground put the originals back online. On October 24 this year, she announced she now owns them.
Do you think labels that sign kids are protecting their investment, or keeping them trapped?

🚨 "Do not move unless I tell you to move."
Police stood over ex-Cowboys star Dez Bryant with a rifle as he lay cuffed face-down in a Texas parking lot.
Bryant says a driver threatened to shoot him. Police found no gun, then cited Bryant for assault.
It happened Sunday around 1 PM outside Chiloso Mexican Bistro in Southlake. Bryant says two drivers cut him off, and one hinted he'd shoot him. Bryant admits warning, "You pull that gun… you better use it because if you don't I'm going to do something to you," and knocking the man's phone from his hand.
Police say callers reported a fight and a possible weapon, so officers drew guns as a precaution.
Bryant, 37, got a Class C citation. He says his daughters watched, an officer told him to "be the bigger person," and the probe was "very one-sided."
Should the driver Bryant says threatened to shoot him have been cited too?

🚨NO ARREST: A Black FedEx driver says this white business owner assaulted him and threatened to shoot him in the FACE.
On camera, the driver says: "That's why you had to threaten with a gun."
His answer: "Yup."
LeRoy Vann says he was doing a routine pickup on Orange Avenue in Tallahassee during FAMU's homecoming. As he walked out with a case already scanned into FedEx's system, he says the owner chased him down, grabbed it, headbutted him, and said he'd get his "pistol."
Police showed up, K-9 unit and all. A witness told them she saw everything. Vann asked to press charges. Police said they had to "do an investigation."
Then, Vann says, an officer told him the owner "just didn't like the way you picked up the case."
"If that was me doing that to him, I would have been in handcuffs."
Is he right?
