The best pitcher in baseball refuses to lift weights, warms up by throwing a javelin, and scouts hitters with a paper notebook. The Dodgers paid him $325 million and then hired his sensei too.
The notebook makes sense once you see the rest of his system.
Yamamoto trains under Osamu Yada, who has never told him to touch a barbell. Javelin throws instead of long toss. Handstands, back bridges, breathing work. The Dodgers studied the routine, decided they couldn't improve it, and hired Yada rather than change Yamamoto. During free agency, one team's recruiting gift to him was a team-logoed javelin, just to prove how deep their research went.
The results broke baseball's assumptions. Last November he threw 96 pitches in World Series Game 6, then came out of the bullpen and closed Game 7 the very next day.
Now look at the dugout. Every MLB club runs Hawk-Eye, a dozen cameras per stadium tracking spin, tilt, and swing path on every single pitch. Yamamoto has all of it on an iPad ten feet away.
He writes by hand anyway.
Japanese player development bakes this in. Kids keep baseball journals from little league on, charting every at-bat in their own words. The logic survives contact with analytics. League data tells you what a hitter does on average. A pitcher's own notes capture what that hitter did against him tonight, pitch by pitch, while the at-bat is still fresh. By the third time through the order, he's working from a document no analytics department can generate.
Mookie Betts watched this for two seasons. This spring he started throwing javelins too.
Baseball built the most surveilled playing field in sports. Its best October pitcher still trusts the notebook in his back pocket more.
13 spots left for camp on Oct. 25! If you’re an uncommitted 2027 or 2028, don’t miss this.

When a player tells you they feel “off,” where do you start?
Before getting too deep into the swing or delivery, sometimes the first question is much simpler:
Are they balanced?
Athletes are elite compensators. They’ll find a way to complete the task.
But how much extra effort and energy does it take?
How much does that take away from the simplicity of putting the bat on the ball or consistently filling up the zone?
For some athletes, maybe not much.
For others, those compensations can show up as inconsistency, performance issues or even tightness and discomfort over time.
That’s why balance is one of the first things we want to understand.

Joe Burrow shares a masterclass on habits and how he thinks about goals.
"The way I think about day-to-day goals now is just do whatever you need to do to get better that day."
"If you do that, you'll reach your mountain goals - the headline goals that you want to reach."
It sounds simple. That doesn't mean it's easy. Listen to this example:
"I caught myself the other day in practice. I was like, 'It's hot. I'm tired. It's a long practice today. It's a Sunday. Everybody else is sleeping.'"
"And then I snapped myself out of it. I was like, 'Wake the f*** up, Joe. It's time to get better.'"
That's the difference. The greats catch themselves before the excuses take over.
"Each rep throughout the day is unique and you learn so much from it.
"All you got to do is just embrace that and get better every day and you'll get to where you want to get to."
It means show up and do the work.
Your goal is to win the day. And then stack the days.

After morning worship I felt led for more of His word. Preparing my heart before preparing the field.
Genesis 2:15 …”to work it and take care of it”. Grateful for the opportunity to work, serve, and take care of what God has entrusted to me.
Two more chances to get on campus with us this fall! 🍁
