Three years ago today, a gunman killed 18 people and injured 13 others in a shooting rampage in Lewiston, Maine. Families were gathered for youth night at the local bowling alley and Maine’s deaf and hard of hearing community were gathered at a restaurant for a corn hole competition.
Mainers demanded action, and their leaders listened. State lawmakers passed a 72-hour waiting period for gun purchases and expanded background checks to help keep guns out of the wrong hands. And last year, Mainers voted to pass a red flag law, which allows family members to petition courts to remove firearms from a loved one in danger.
These laws have been lifesaving but more must be done. Our hearts are with the victims, survivors, their families, and the entire Lewiston community as we work to build on this progress.
