I will comment on the French news only from a market perspective.
It is rare that markets respond to news of this kind, as it is generally viewed as temporary and not enough to ultimately move the economy
BUT:
- This could move politics, and impact voting into the crucial elections in 2017 (further away from the center).
- These riots are so severe that there may be an impact via a/ lower tourism, b/ lower business/consumer confidence
- OAT spreads widened to 140bp in Sep (on levered selling), but we have seen some consolidation in Oct (as real money is watching, but have not reduced yet). The images from this weekend, will not make real money more comfortable.

What I witnessed so far today in Paris after the day of destruction that occurred yesterday:
The flagship stores are OK. Louis Vuitton on Champs Elysees, Dior 30 Montaigne, Hermes on George V and Faubourg St Honore, Cartier on Champs Elysees, Faubourg St Honore, rue de la Paix, Van Cleef & Arpels on place Vendôme. Chanel rue Cambon. All fine.
The ones that suffered a few tags and broken windows: Louis Vuitton on place Vendôme. Ralph Lauren on place de la Madeleine, Bucherer on rue Scribe/Blv des capucines (Rolex retailer), Bulgari on place Vendome. At LV place vendome, workers were already trying hard to take off the tags.

🇨🇭🇩🇪 German manufacturing is undergoing a structural crisis, and credible identification of its causes clearly requires rigorous research. Yet my advice to fellow researchers remains the same, namely to study 🇨🇭 in depth, since, as the chart suggests, it offers an excellent counterfactual. Why is nobody studying the stellar performance of Swiss industry?

Should Europe Do ‘Fiscal QE'?
In our latest Bloomberg Economics piece available @TheTerminal we look at what would happen if European debt management offices shifted issuance toward T-bills — following the path taken by the US Treasury.
Our estimates: up to €55bn in debt-servicing cost savings over the next five years.
But the indirect effects could be even more interesting:
(i) a liquidity injection of 'quasi-money' as the ECB’s QT drains reserves;
(ii) less duration supply on the long-end of the curve, lowering term premia and easing financing conditions; and,
(iii) a deeper collateral pool supporting the euro’s international role.
The costs? Higher refinancing risk and greater exposure to inflation shocks — but potentially stronger fiscal discipline.
