Many people fail to see one important factor that could shape President Tinubu’s performance in Northern Nigeria, particularly Kano, in the 2027 elections. The opposition’s challenge may not be limited to the presidential candidate alone. The quality, credibility, and popularity of its candidates for the Senate and House of Representatives could also influence the broader political contest. Take Kano North, for example, where the Senate President comes from. If the ADC and other opposition parties struggle to present candidates with strong grassroots connections, proven track records, and broad public acceptance, they may find it difficult to mobilise voters effectively across the senatorial district. The same question applies to Kano Central and Kano South. Who are the opposition candidates? What are their political structures, records, and levels of acceptance among the people? Elections are not won by party labels alone. Candidates, local political structures, alliances, and voters’ assessment of performance all matter. The key question is this: Have the opposition build a credible and competitive team across Kano’s three senatorial districts, or will its candidate-selection challenges reshape the political contest in 2027?
