“Fall soil samples collected after harvest (up to 6 weeks after the R8 growth stage) can be useful to monitor changes in [root-knot nematode] population densities or to make management decisions for the subsequent cropping season. Soil samples should be collected at an 8 to 10-inch (20 to 25-cm) soil depth within the root zone of the previously existing crop.”

Fusarium stalk rot causes shredded pith that may be tan to light pink. Brown streaks may be observed on the lower internodes.
The fungi overwinter in corn residue, other dead plant residue, and in corn seed.
Resistance to Fusarium stalk rot is available. Rotation and tillage will reduce inoculum.

Collecting fall soil samples? @GregTylkaISU reminds us fall is a great time to sample for soybean cyst nematode (SCN). SCN can reduce yields without obvious symptoms. Knowing your SCN levels can help guide future variety and management decisions.

Today’s #Harvest26 update comes from Paige Clawson, Southwest Kansas Corn Commissioner, who harvested their fungicide efficacy and timing plot last week. The Kansas Corn Commission collaborated with Dr. Rodrigo Onofre, KSU Plant Pathologist, on five large scale, 40-60 acre plots replicated throughout the state. This applied research investigates the impact of different fungicide applications on yield.
Results of the trials will be made public soon and can be found at kscorn.com/onfarmresearch.

Today is another Weedy Wednesday, a monthly spotlight on weed identification tips from GROW!
Suzannah Hale, a then-Virginia Tech graduate student with Dr. Shawn Askew (and now a University of Florida Ph.D. student with Dr. Eli Russell), has some quick tips on how to identify hemp dogbane!

When it comes to soybean desiccation, a small difference in timing can have a big impact! Dr. Mike Mulvaney shares what researchers at Mississippi State University are seeing when they compare applications at R6.5 and R7, including differences in yield and grain quality. Working through purple seed stain and grain quality plots this week. Honestly, very little purple seed stain….but have a few plots with a good bit in a large Cercospora leaf blight variety trial @T_birdPathology

Set the combine to harvest clean, whole kernels, as aflatoxins & fumonisins are often concentrated in light, damaged kernels.
To minimize kernel damage, use the lowest possible cylinder speed necessary to shell grain effectively while maintaining acceptable loss levels (less than 1%). Excessive cylinder speed is the leading cause of kernel damage, so adjust concave clearance to avoid breaking cobs excessively before increasing cylinder speed. Ensure sufficient airflow to remove chaff & small, light kernels.

Weather this year has been all over the place. Drought early then a late-May flood and back to dry conditions again. Planting date had a significant impact on crop conditions in both corn and soybean in SC. Seeing lots of green stem depending on variety in irrigated MG 4 beans.

Regularly monitor bins for potential issues.
If grain becomes wet, use fans to increase airflow and reduce grain moisture levels, preventing fungal growth.
If mycotoxin-producing fungi begin to grow in high-moisture corn, mycotoxin level in stored grain can increase. Be sure to wear proper personal protection equipment, if necessary, for examining grain bins.
