The Ingenious "Snake Bridge" on the Macclesfield Canal - An Engineering Marvel of the 19th Century CE :
The "Snake Bridge," located along the Macclesfield Canal in England, is an extraordinary feat of engineering that dates back to 1831 CE. This innovative structure was specifically designed to facilitate the movement of horses towing boats across the canal without the need to detach them from their loads. With several of these fascinating bridges dotting the canal, the snake bridge exemplifies the creativity and resourcefulness of 19th Century CE, engineering.
Often referred to as a "traveling bridge," the snake bridge allows horses to seamlessly navigate the canal's edge while maintaining their towing tasks. Traditionally, horses would have to be unhitched from their towlines to change sides, a process that was both time-consuming and labor-intensive. The snake bridge eliminates this inconvenience by allowing the towline to remain connected as the horse crosses.
The key feature of this design is its unique spiral ramp, enabling the horse to make a smooth 360-degree turn while crossing the bridge. This ingenious engineering solution minimizes interruptions during the journey, saving both time and effort—an essential benefit for an industry that depended on efficient transport.
Constructed from durable materials such as cast iron, brick, or stone, these bridges are both practical and long-lasting. The ramps typically incorporate rows of elevated bricks or stones to enhance traction and prevent horses from slipping, particularly in the often muddy or wet conditions encountered along canal routes.
During the era when horse-drawn canal boats played a crucial role in British industry, snake bridges represented a progressive approach to improving efficiency and addressing transportation challenges. Today, they remain as lasting symbols of a time when engineering ingenuity was harnessed to resolve everyday industrial issues, highlighting the creativity of those who constructed Britain's canal systems.

Fellow YT creators, beware a phishing email being sent to the contact address in your channel page, sending you to a YT video purporting to be from YT (but not) and instructing you to click on a documents link to approve new Ts & Cs else “you will be demonetised”. IT IS FAKE.
Sadly, @TeamYouTube just replied to my warning with a stock, template scam warning reply and not taking it seriously.

Boats appear to be cruising less on our #canalsandrivers. @CRTBoating Annual Lockage Report 2024 shows 5% decrease in lockage nationally compared with 2023, which was itself down on 2022.

@CruisingTheCut Just saw this. Fantastic! Wonder what happened to the fleet?
In the 1970s, the Royal Navy created a canal fleet consisting of narrow boats designed to resemble a County-class destroyer, a Type 42 destroyer, a Leander-class frigate, and a Resolution-class sub. The fleet toured England as part of a recruiting campaign.
