If someone asks you how much a single family's life is worth to the United States Navy, tell them the exact price: ten million dollars of steel.
On April 29, 1975, as Saigon fell, a tiny two-seat wooden-and-fabric Cessna plane with almost no fuel left circled desperately above the American aircraft carrier USS Midway.
Inside that tiny cockpit, a father named Major Buang-Ly had crammed his wife and five small children, including a baby. He scribbled a note on a map, wrapped it around his pistol so it would not blow into the ocean, and dropped it onto the carrier deck.
A young American sailor picked up the crumpled paper and ran it up to Captain Lawrence Chambers.
The note read: "Can you move these helicopter to the other side, I can land on your runway, I can fly 1 hour more. Please rescue me. Major Buang, Wife and 5 child."
The flight deck of the USS Midway was completely jammed from bow to stern with military helicopters. A Cessna has no tailhook to catch carrier wires, and its pilot had never landed on a ship in his life.
By every military regulation, Captain Chambers had been in command for only five weeks. Throwing millions of dollars of U.S. government aircraft into the sea without permission from Washington could end his career in a court-martial.
Chambers looked up at the tiny plane circling in the wind with five children inside. He did not call an accountant in Washington.
"Clear the deck," the captain ordered.
Hundreds of young American sailors in yellow and green jerseys ran to the edge of the ship, put their shoulders against massive Huey helicopters, and shoved ten million dollars worth of machinery straight off the cliff into the South China Sea.
Captain Chambers turned the giant carrier into the wind at twenty-five knots. The tiny Cessna came down, bounced once on the steel runway, and rolled to a safe stop with feet to spare.
When the cockpit door opened and five small children stepped out onto the deck, three thousand American sailors roared so loud it drowned out the engines, and immediately passed around a hat to collect cash for the family's new life in America.
When the math says a child's life is too expensive, an American throws the math into the ocean.

Imagine being given somewhere around 80 years on a planet floating through an incomprehensibly enormous universe, surrounded by billions of people you will never meet, mysteries you will never solve, places you will never see, and more knowledge than you could absorb in a thousand lifetimes...
and spending the whole damn thing worrying about money, arguing with strangers, impressing people you don't even like, and doing something you hate five days a week because somebody convinced you that was life.
I don't know, man.
I think we may have gotten a few things terribly wrong.

9/11 — 25 years later.
Twenty-five years ago, I was 14 years old, sitting at Al-Mansoor Zoo in Baghdad, Iraq, with my friends.
We had very limited information. Saddam Hussein’s regime tightly controlled what the Iraqi public could see and hear through state media. Then we heard the news: the Twin Towers in New York had been attacked.
Even at 14, I knew one thing: ordinary Iraqis had nothing to do with it.
We didn't know who was responsible. Most of us had never even heard the name Osama bin Laden. And Saddam Hussein didn't operate that way.
I left my friends, went back to my father's shop, and told him what had happened.
Then I said something that made him laugh:
“America is going to invade Iraq and get rid of Saddam once and for all.”
My father looked at me and said:
“Son, Saddam isn't going anywhere. And if he dies, his son Qusay will take over.”
I didn't argue with him.
Two years later, Saddam Hussein was gone.
For me, September 11 ultimately changed the direction of my entire life.
At 17 years old. I went on to begin a career as a combat linguist supporting the U.S. military. I served, deployed, and experienced things I never could have imagined as that 14-year-old kid in Baghdad.
Four IEDs. A kidnapping. A bullet to my elbow. The assassination of my father because of my service to the United States. And the assassination of my fiancée.
Eventually, I became a U.S. citizen.
And after everything I've experienced, I can say this without hesitation:
I am proud of the choices I made. I am proud of my service to the United States. And I would do it all over again.
September 11 also taught me something that Americans should never forget:
Freedom cannot be taken for granted, and security requires vigilance.
We must protect our borders, enforce our immigration laws, thoroughly vet applicants, and make sure programs designed to help our allies are not exploited by those who seek to harm the United States. Also, I have Exposed IOM Immigration process last year.
Twenty-five years later, I remember the innocent people who were murdered that day.
I remember the families who never got to say goodbye.
And I remember exactly where I was when the world changed.
Never forget. 🇺🇸

This is a very simple truth that people forget. To the extent that there was a genocide in Gaza, it was a (unique situation) of an autogenocide.
Israel does bear responsibility for the devastation: IDF was the one happily, often vengefully, pressing the trigger in this suicide by cop.
The government should have let women and children into the Negev desert; make sure criminals are prosecuted; It is possible that an hostage deal was possible earlier.
Israeli society, media, abandoned basic principles of distinction between combatants and non-combatans, proportionality.
But people should not forget who was the agent who bears the primary responsibility for this tragedy. It was a truly unique evil that is Hamas.
Urban warfare scholar John Spencer says Hamas has created a uniquely barbaric form of warfare that much of the world fails to understand.
Hamas doesn’t merely accept the deaths of its own civilians as collateral damage.
He says civilian deaths are an integral part of its political strategy.
“The Hamas leadership… have many public statements… saying they need the blood of their women, children, and elderly to achieve their goals.”
“They said they not only want it, they need it to achieve this goal of theirs in the afterlife.”
“It’s a really sick political strategy.”
“Even the Japanese, the Nazis, while they accepted civilian casualties, that wasn’t their strategy.”
“To get their own population killed in order to achieve this political goal in the afterlife.”
“There’s 600 miles of tunnels in Gaza, as one example.”
“There’s 2.2 million people there. All of them could fit in their tunnels with ease and escape what’s going on the surface.”
“But Hamas actually makes written and public statements saying these are not for the civilians, and civilians are not allowed.”
“That’s where you get Hamas occupying hospitals, schools, mosques, all of it, because they know that those are protected sites.”
“That’s a war crime in and of itself, but it’s this reverse engineering of the rules of war.”

This is crazy and needs to be rectified. It is genuinely hard to believe that the city cannot sustain a museum that's been around since before the Civil War.

I have undertaken this project to put a face to 9/11 by posting photos of everyone killed that day. If after everything that happened you can vote for the ideology that caused it then it's as if you are killing them yourself! Pictured below was 29 year old Christopher Amoroso who was a Port Authority police officer. Here he is famously shown helping a pregnant woman out of the towers. He ran back in four times and was killed when the North Tower imploded. He left behind a wife and 19 month old daughter and to forget even a single one of these people is a blasphemy!

One of Gaza’s bravest voices - the man who co-organized the 2019 “We Want to Live” street protests against Hamas’s death culture - just delivered an unflinching demand: Hamas’s ideology must be eradicated the same way Nazism was. Wipe it out completely.
His vision is clear:
Demilitarize Gaza first.
Then deradicalize.
And finally rebuild a people capable of critical thinking and tolerance.
The UAE, as Moumen notes, proves it is possible.
Watch this. Share it.
The next generation of Gazans - and the entire region - depends on it.
