We name constellations of stars instead of dandelions because one seems permanent to us. Seems. There, the hunter stands tall with a shining belt. Here, the dandelions are a running elk, gold against an emerald sky. Both are nature. Both fleeting. As real as we can make them.

Here it is! The cover for my next horror novel, Children of the Wrong Heaven. A mommy support group becomes convinced their children are aliens. This deeply upsets the townsfolk around them…and also the aliens.

Tough writing day. But comforted by the knowledge that, when this novel is finished and I’m reading it a couple years from now, I won’t be able to tell which parts were hard to write and which were easy. The hard days are fleeting; whatever small good I win from them is not.

And the problem isn’t that he is wrong. The problem is that he is incurious. He is missing the imaginative perception to understand that the river herself, the river who made the valley, is just like him but bigger and more powerful. She is the divine he craves. (2/3)

When we turn away from sensing our family resemblance in nature, we transform every wonder in the universe from a window into a mirror. We block out the light in the name of celebrating ourselves above all else. (3/3)

A man comes to the edge of a river valley. He thinks how difficult it would have been for him to carve that same valley with just his two hands, with shovel and pick and his bundle of days. So, now he knows that God must be like him, but so much bigger and more powerful. (1/3)

Does anybody know how you get into being one of those carnivorous bog plants? That seems like a pretty chill lifestyle.

I want political candidates to do three day retreats during which they stay in a cabin without internet access, no phones or other devices, just a computer with basic word-processing software. (1/2)

At the end of the retreat, they share what they have written with the public. They must produce at least one poem and one essay (on any subject they choose). I think this would reveal a lot. (2/2)

One of the most fun and original books I’ve read in years. Excellent storytelling. See for yourself.

I love that "candle fly" is an old name for moths. So much poetry and imagery condensed into two words.

Why I'll never use gen ai? Thinking is living. I prefer to own the substance of my lifetime, not just lease it from a tech company. And I can’t imagine thinking so little of myself that I could accept an artificial substitute for honest human connection.
