Sansa and Arya, Winterfell corridor, early evening. Sansa stood near the window, hands clasped tightly in front of her, the candlelight catching the copper in her hair. Arya leaned against the stone wall opposite her, arms crossed, one boot scuffing the floor. “I’m supposed to marry Prince Joffrey,” Sansa said, the words coming out a little too carefully, as if she were trying them on. “And I’ll give him sons with beautiful blond hair.” Arya’s nose wrinkled. “Blond hair? Like his?” “Of course like his. He’s the prince.” Sansa’s voice brightened for a moment. “We’ll live in the Red Keep. There’ll be feasts and tourneys and silk gowns from across the Narrow Sea. I’ll be queen someday.” Arya stared at her. “You want to marry him? The one who smiled when that butcher’s boy got hit?” Sansa’s cheeks flushed. “That was… a misunderstanding. Joffrey is gallant. He rode in the tourney and—” “He rode a horse and waved a sword. So does half the yard.” Arya pushed off the wall. “And ‘sons with beautiful blond hair.’ Seven hells, Sansa. You don’t even know him. You don’t know what he’s like when no one’s watching.” “I know enough,” Sansa snapped, then immediately lowered her voice. “Father says the match is good for the North. Mother says I’ll be safe. Everyone says it’s an honor.” “Everyone says a lot of things.” Arya’s gray eyes were sharp. “What do you want? Not the songs. Not the dresses. You.” Sansa opened her mouth, closed it, then looked down at her hands. The candle on the wall sputtered. For a moment the only sound was the wind against the shutters. “I want to be happy,” she said finally, quieter. “And I want our family to be safe. If marrying him does that…” Arya was quiet for a few heartbeats. Then she shrugged, the movement small. “Fine. But if he ever makes you cry like that again—the way you did after the feast—I’m not sewing him a banner. I’m putting an arrow in him.” Sansa almost smiled, the corner of her mouth twitching despite herself. “You’re not allowed to shoot princes, Arya.” “Then he’d better be a good one.” Arya turned toward the door, then glanced back. “And if you really do have sons with blond hair, don’t teach them to be like him. Teach them to be like Father. Or like Robb. Or even like me, if you have to.” Sansa watched her sister disappear down the corridor. The candle guttered again. She stayed where she was, the words beautiful blond hair still hanging in the air, and for the first time they didn’t sound quite as lovely as they had a moment before.

At the residents' meeting, my upstairs neighbour stood up with a printed complaint. "Some people think nobody can hear them," he said. "The noise from the flat below has been unbearable for months." He didn't say my name. He didn't need to. The chairman read the flat number aloud, and every head turned. I said, "I'm sorry for any disturbance," and wrote the date in my notebook. At home that night, I opened an app I'd downloaded in the spring. I'd been testing a new baby monitor and wanted to know if my flat was too noisy for her to sleep. The app logged the sound level every night from 8 PM to 7 AM, and I'd never deleted the history. I exported six months of data and made a table with four columns. The date, the loudest reading, the time it happened, and the average level. Not one night went above the level of a quiet conversation. My loudest recorded sound was a dropped saucepan at 6:40 in the evening. Then I added a second set of readings from the app's "ceiling" setting, which picks up noise from above. On 38 nights, the loudest sounds came from the flat over mine. They were thuds and dragging noises between 11:30 PM and 1:15 AM, one after the other, like furniture being moved. I highlighted those 38 nights in yellow. Beside each one, I wrote the time. I printed it all on four pages and stapled the corner. At the next meeting, he repeated his speech with more confidence. The chairman asked if anyone had anything to add. I stood up, walked to the front, and placed the pages on the table without a word...

My Husband Took One Look at Our Baby's Legs and Started Photographing Them Like Evidence Dev found the marks at six on a Saturday morning, during a diaper change, and the first thing he did was reach for his phone. I heard the camera shutter from the kitchen. Click, click, click. Then his voice, very low. "Joanna. Come here. Don't wake Anya." Ravi was fifteen months old, lying on the changing table kicking his socks. Across his thighs and bottom were round sores, a dozen of them. Some were small blisters. Others had burst and crusted over with a honey-colored scab. Each one was about the size of a pencil eraser. "What are those?" I said. "You tell me." "I don't know. He had a rash on Tuesday. I put cream on it." "Those are cigarette burns." His voice cracked on the last word. "Jo, those are cigarette burns." I want you to understand what that word meant to him. Dev has a small round scar on the inside of his left forearm. His father put a cigarette out there when Dev was five. He told me about it once, in the dark, two years into our marriage. He has never said it out loud since. He quit smoking the week we found out I was pregnant with Anya, and he can't stand the smell on a stranger's jacket. "They're not burns," I said. "He's never been near a cigarette." "Somebody did this." "Dev, nobody..." "Who's been around him?" He had stopped photographing. His hand was shaking. "Your brother? Your mom's boyfriend, Gary? Does Gary smoke?" "Gary hasn't watched him alone in his life." "Who has?" "Me! Daycare. You." He looked at me. It lasted maybe two seconds. I've gone back over those two seconds more than any others. "You've been exhausted for a month," he said. "You said you were at the end of your rope." "I said I was tired of the night wakings." "Joanna." His eyes were wet. "If something happened, if you lost your temper one time, I need you to tell me. I won't be angry. I swear on my life I won't be." He said it like a gift. He was offering to forgive me for something I'd never done. "I didn't touch him," I whispered. "I'd cut off my hand first." "Then who?" "I don't know! Let's just go to the doctor. Please." "Mommy?" Anya was standing in the doorway in her sleep shirt, hair flattened on one side. She's eight. She likes mysteries and keeps a notebook where she records "clues" about everything, from missing socks to why the neighbor's dog barks at noon. She'd been there long enough to hear the whole thing. "Daddy said cigarette," she said slowly. "Somebody put cigarettes on Ravi?" "Anya, honey, go back to bed." "Aunt Priscilla said once that when a baby gets hurt, it's always the person who's home all day." She looked at me. "You're home all day, Mommy." I felt the floor go out from under me. "Anya..." "Did you?" she asked. It wasn't cruel. She asked it the way she asks everything, because she wanted the answer. "I'll keep your secret. I won't write it in my notebook." I'd have taken any other blow. I knelt in front of her. "I did not hurt your brother. I promise on everything." She nodded slowly. But she took a step back, then another. Dev still held the phone in his hand with the camera screen glowing, showing a close-up of Ravi's leg. Anya looked at it, then at her father. "Are you going to call the police?" she asked. He didn't answer. He only stood there, ashen, and I understood that he already had. By noon, the police had left, and a social worker named Ms. Cortez had been to our house. She was gentle and unhurried. She photographed Ravi's legs, asked who lived in the home, asked whether anyone smoked, and asked how I'd been coping. I said "fine" in a voice I didn't recognize. Dev's mother arrived at one. Lorraine is seventy, small and sharp-eyed, a retired school secretary who has never once forgotten a name. She looked at Ravi's legs for a long time, then turned to me.

I rent a small house from a married couple. Both of their names are on the lease, but since I moved in, I’ve always sent my rent to the wife, just like the agreement says. Apparently, their marriage is falling apart because the husband recently texted me saying his wife no longer has permission to collect rent and that I need to start sending all future payments directly to him. Less than an hour later, his wife called and told me not to give him a single dollar under any circumstances.

Jon snow should be grateful his people showed up. Jon Snow runs toward an army, Jack Sparrow runs away from one. 😂💀 In Game of Thrones, Jon is ready to die fighting the Bolton army at the Battle of the Bastards. Meanwhile, Jack Sparrow would rather let the entire army chase somebody else. Jon fights for honor. Jack fights for his life. Both are legends, but let's be honest: Jon should be grateful his people showed up, Jack would've been halfway across the sea already.
