In 2010 Bitcoin still didn’t have a settled look. On November 1 that year an anonymous BitcoinTalk user called bitboy posted a simple design: a white tilted ₿ on a flat orange circle. The orange was exactly #F7931A. No foundation approved it and no style guide enforced it. The community just kept using it until it became the default color on exchanges, wallets, merch, and charts. It stuck because it was clear, high-contrast, and immediately readable at any size.
Most later attempts to rebrand Bitcoin’s orange eventually circle back close to the same hex when they want people to recognize it. Design sites and brand palettes still list #F7931A as Bitcoin’s primary color years later. The shade became a cultural shortcut — orange still reads as Bitcoin to a large part of the space.
The same hex is now permanently recorded in The Official Register of Color Names under the name Bitcoin: color-register.org/color/bit…. That gives the code a public record that ties it directly to the name.
A token called f7931a / $BITCOIN doesn’t have to invent its story. The number is already the historical color code the community chose and kept. It points to a specific moment in 2010, it is still the shade people recognize, and it has a registry entry that literally names the color Bitcoin.
