I have a slightly different take. I think it's aimed at an audience that has to know nothing about the character to even be entertained.
James Gunn made James Gunn movie ten years too late.
Supergirl is my favorite comic book character. I had infinite hope and knew without a shadow of doubt that they'd crush that hope mercilessly.
They picked an 'award-winning' poorly-selling comic arc (no issue made it into the top 30, even just DC's top 30, and sales declined each issue). They picked a story that required you to care for Supergirl before giving an audience any reason. They took a character of intelligence, compassion, and hope and gave us an ad for SSRIs.
They picked an actress who, politics aside, also didn't look like Kara in any appreciable way.
The movie had serious plot issues (watch Pitch Meeting for Supergirl on YouTube if you want a humorous list).
They ignored what made Kara who she is, what set her apart from Kal, and turned her into a self-loathing, self-destructive, nihilistic low-grade moron.
There was a tug-of-war between Gunn and the director over many aspects (editing, music), and Gunn threw his studio position around to win it.
All of this is borne out in the fact that Supergirl 2026 set to lose double the amount the 1984 movie lost, adjusted for inflation.
They took Kara and squandered her and now I'm going to have to wait until we've colonized Mars and achieved world peace before I get a new version of her on a movie screen (if they even exist by then).
Bravo DC and Gunn. If only this failure of 'modern audiencing' were predictable beforehand.

There is no 'human right' to break into someone else's house and live there, taking their job, crowding their school, demanding medical care, and draining their social security.
Decency does not mean that people owe something to people we don't know crashing our catered party. And don't tell me you paid. Chipping in $10 when you cost $30+ doesn't math.
If there's a "very real threat and fear" about known, published, legal consequences to lawless actions, don't do it. Certainly don't cry to the people you've inflicted with the costs.

I will give benefit of the doubt, she is apparently half white half Puerto Rican. Perhaps she does not know the struggles of her own culture, maybe she does not have family members who have been or could have been affected by this. Maybe she uses the Latina bit as part of her branding but really doesnβt claim la cultura. I do not know.
I am Mexican American. I know from personal experience and from stories told in my family the hardships and very real reality of what ICE is. Let me give you a little history lesson.
In Latin culture or at least Mexicans in the states would know ICE by a different name. βLa Migraβ which is Spanish slang for the migration. Growing up I heard about this horrific thing, to me La Migra was the boogeyman, this ominous thing that took away your loved ones.
This is one of the very reasons I grew up having Panic disorder and Anxiety. Imagine young baby Glitch whoβs only 4 years old being so terrified that her father could be taken awayβ¦it still destroys me when I think about it. Iβm crying having to think back to those moments in time. Before anyone says anything my father did his process and is a US citizen so donβt even go there.
I am SO fucking lucky, thankful and proud of my family and everything they have gone through. But there are MANY who are not as lucky, MANY who are currently living in the fear, the anxiety, and the panic.
ChaCha, as someone with kids, I would have thought you would have some heart, some understanding, that as a parent you must know the heartache seeing families torn apart does. Please be thankful that you donβt have to live with the fear of you being separated from your kids. Please be happy your kids donβt have to wonder where you went or if theyβll ever see you again.
I am not a mother, I do not know and cannot imagine the intricacies of motherhood. But I do know, that as a daughter, as an aunt, as an ex-wifeβ¦my βmother bearβ instincts kick in if anyone I loved was threatened with this reality.
So ChaCha, Latina to Latinaβ¦HAVE SOME FUCKING EMPATHY. DO BETTER. BE THE BETTER IN THIS WORLD.
We can all do better to connect and be decent human beings, letβs choose that path. β€οΈ
