My story, “The Wholecoiner” donhoughauthor.blogspot.com/…

The last paragraph of Cynthia Ozick’s introduction to Saul Bellow’s Seize the Day (which she wrote in 1996)

Anyone else reading this one?

“James Miley” jfc wsj 😂

Got all these blus at the thrift store this week, $1.75 each. The big ones: Criterion Fisher King and a 4k Steelbook of Groundhog Day

Found at the thrift store for one dollar

Obligatory picture of the thing

Saw Social Reckoning yesterday (3 stars), getting a bunch of Criterions in the flash sale, watching the Celtics open the NBA season later today, Table for Fortune should be delivered tomorrow, and I’m prepping the tenth-anniversary edition of my first novel. Such a pleasant week!

New book purchases: recommendations from friends, new copies of old favorites, filling out my Cormac gaps so I can read the biography, writing inspiration

Never thought we’d get an Amazons reissue before a new edition of Darconville’s Cat

On a train to go see Andrew Martin! Have him sign some of his books (and give him a couple to take home 🙂)

My top 5 documentaries: Hoop Dreams Stone Reader Tabloid The King of Kong That Moment: Magnolia Diary

For a second I thought criterion was releasing one of my fav guilty pleasures

My favorite moment so far in the new Love is Blind season is when a guy tells a girl he loves Eyes Wide Shut and she tells him she does too

I thought Lance Oppenheim was Joshua Oppenheimer until about 45 seconds ago

But you could still trust the feelings of someone who slept around. I still deserved trust, some kind of trust, right? I was almost enlightened enough to see Leslie as I saw myself, as a soul not entirely governed by the actions of the body she happened to inhabit.

Some recent physical media purchases; new, used, and thrift

I remember talking about Nox (and a million other things) with @GianlucaBertoia and @maidofsubtext in 2022 at my first DFW conference. What a magical time that was. (And now’s as good a time as any to delve into Carson)

Got all these for $1 each at the thrift store, even the unread IJ. As I was walking out, a 70-year-old lady saw my stack and said “Are you going to read Infinite Jest?” I sheepishly said that it’s my favorite book and couldn’t resist getting it for a buck. She gave me a thumbs-up
