Let’s talk about this and what this potential means for AI in gaming. The genie is out of the bottle and there’s no way putting it back in. AI will probably start playing a larger role in gaming. That’s why Epic also chooses the Disney x Marvel game as battleground. It is two giant franchises in one game and I am pretty sure this is too big to fail. It will be the watershed moment to legitimize generative AI in gaming, not only for coding but also for art. Enough people will flock to it and it will make money, no matter how much you want it to crash and burn. This is the testing ground. Why do I find this concerning: gaming has been in a downward spiral with extremely bad practices for 15 years now. The date I mark is April 3rd 2006, the release of the golden horse armor DLC for Oblivion. Since then it has been a shitty barrage of practices such as: 👉Online Passes 👉Worthless DLCs 👉Season Passes 👉Online only games, that get yanked away once they go offline 👉Fomo practices 👉Dark patterns 👉And much more I fear the shit AI will enable for these companies to do without much effort. The slop n slide will go down to depths never seen before and the market will be flooded with the worst trash imaginable. Good games will still exist but finding them will be harder than it is already. But then again, with the current hardware crisis who is gonna even play games? We probably are all subscribed to a cloud service in 10 years time. So you can’t even make games yourself anymore. The general prospect for gaming looks more and more grim to me every day. It’s time to get different hobbies or dust off some hobbies I already had. Learn a new skill or two. And you should as well if you are a gamer who is not fond of AI.
