Decolonization requires dismantling colonial institutions and we cannot accomplish this without developing alternatives. This is why studying history is so important because it provides a framework for what a society outside of the colonial structure looks like.

#FreeCongo🇨🇩 Children in Congo are risking their lives in dangerous mines to extract coltan for smartphones and tablets. Tunnel collapses and toxic gases threaten their lives daily. Our technology must not cost them their childhood. Stop child exploitation.

When it comes to the origins of religious beliefs, there are two opposing viewpoints. The cultural source hypothesis argues that religious beliefs are the product of cultural norms in which individuals are socialized to adopt certain religious beliefs, whereas the experiential source hypothesis argues that religious beliefs develop as a means of explaining certain universal supernatural experiences such as near death experiences. Both views may differ on how and why religions develop, but both are clear on the importance of culture in shaping religious belief.

A.I. is exposing many of the myths of capitalism, such as the notion that capitalists are "job creators." Capitalism isn't about employing people so that they can support themselves and their families. It's extracting labor as cheaply as possible. This is why so many corporations are eager to replace their work force with A.I. It is a system which fundamentally does not care about workers and will not hesitate to replace workers for cheaper labor.

The language that we use to talk about history is important. To suggest that our ancestors were sold rather than stolen legitimizes the dehumanizing view that our ancestors were merely chattel. When we state that our ancestors were stolen, it is an acknowledgment that they were human beings who were forcibly taken away from their homelands. One narrative centers the slave traders and slave owners, whereas the other narrative centers the perspectives of the enslaved.
Sold not stolen, sold by tribal Africans.

The Igbo resistance to the British lasted two decades and required constant expeditions. The Igbo resistance is often overlooked because it was not led by notable individual rulers such as Samori Ture, Yaa Asantewaa, Menelik, Maqoma, or Cetshwayo. They also didn't score any major victories such as the Battle of Adwa or the Battle of Isandhlwana. But there are definitely important lessons to learn from how they were able to sustain continued resistance for as long as they did.
If we really look at who put up the best resistance in the the 1880s during the scramble of Africa, the people who did best where the organized states like Wusulu, Liberia, Ethiopia, the Zulu Kingdom. States with governments and standing armies, not the decentralized polities.

We will "lay down our lives in defense of yours." Booker T. Washington, Atlanta Compromise speech, 1895. BTW also built an institution-- Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University)--under unimaginably hostile circumstances, that is still educating Black students. The remarkable and complicated legacy of an ex-slave.
He didn't rationalize racist violence, but white people certainly used some of what Washington stated to justify the violence. Ida B. Wells' criticism of Washington was that he reinforced racist stereotypes of black people to raise money from white audiences by telling them the things that they wanted to hear. In her autobiography, she recalled an exchange with a white man who laughed at one of Washington's jokes, which Wells found to be demeaning to black people. W.E.B. Du Bois offered similar criticism when he pointed out that although Washington spoke out against lynching, Washington's propaganda contained half-truths which suggested that the South was justified in its racist views towards black people.

Toyin Falola pointed out that the decentralized nature of Igbo society made it very difficult for the British to defeat their resistance because subduing the Igbo people was not as simple as conquering one city or capturing a particular ruler. I think we should seriously consider studying examples of African societies with decentralized leadership structures given how often our movements and organizations have fallen whenever the leader is taken out.

Our Baby Brother Kohen Wiley at the age of 1 year old was murdered back in June and the AG of Mississippi justified the murder vindicating the racist white cop and we have Umar and BET engaging in conversations like this.
SNEAK PEEK: "White women are more sexually free." An unpopular opinion or a hot take with some truth? 👀 The conversation is just getting started. Don't miss the series premiere of #NickCannonAtNight TONIGHT at 10/9c on BET!

Why so many take pride in being loud and wrong? Malcolm’s philosophy is public for all of our consumption. He wanted us involved in politics using voting as a tool not an end item. Please stop being intellectually lazy about our great ancestor. Let him speak! 👇🏾
