@DTSK21 joined other stakeholders at the launch of the Kuana Innovation Lab Program. This both an innovative and inclusive space that will create opportunities for women and youth ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left behind.
Kenya’s textile and apparel sector recorded exports of US $500 million in 2025 supporting 66,000 direct jobs and contributing 2 per cent to the country’s GDP. The government is targeting to raise textile and apparel exports to US $2 billion by 2035 and create approximately 200,000 direct jobs. This will be achieved by increasing cotton production from the current 28,000 bales to the required 140,000 bales per year. Speaking when she officially launched the KUANA Fashion Innovation Lab last evening in Nairobi, Principal Secretary for Trade Regina Ombam said Kenya has about 350,000 acres available for cotton expansion, giving the country room to increase production, raise farmers’ incomes, and supply local industries with raw materials. The lab, an initiative by KikoRomeo, brings together designers, artisans, students, manufacturers and investors to grow Kenya’s fashion industry. PS Ombam said the lab will help designers strengthen their business skills, understand markets and build brands that can grow beyond small bespoke production.

Mr Amos Natumanya — @UNDAuthority Access to medicines goes beyond simply having medicines available in the country. Mr Natumanya highlighted affordability, geographical accessibility, acceptability, and the safety, efficacy and quality of medicines as equally important parts of access. #AccessToMedicines He also noted the need to balance regulatory requirements and fees with the goal of supporting local manufacturing without creating additional costs that ultimately make medicines less affordable. @ITPCglobal

Inclusion isn’t just a conversation, it’s a commitment. Yesterday at KICC, GDDC joined the National Conversation on building a Kenya where diversity is respected, every voice counts, and no community is left behind. As @MwauraIsaac1 emphasized, equal opportunity must be a reality for everyone. Let’s move from conversation to action. #DiversityInclusionDisabilityRights Shirikisha. Jumuisha. Wezesha

"As we bid Esther Mkamori goodbye, I urge all of us, even as we travel to Embu, Nyamira, and other counties, to mentor the young persons we interact with. They are the future Esthers. She has set the standard for all of us." Sally Nduta (@sallynduta1) We had the opportunity to celebrate and bid farewell to one of our longest-serving team members, Esther Mkamori (@mkamoriesther ), who has served the disability community through UDPK for over eight (8) years. It was a bittersweet moment. She was not only dedicated and diligent in her service, but she was also, and will continue to be, a mentor and champion of the rights of persons with disabilities. She made the office a great place to work by appreciating and working well with people of different personalities, bringing out the best in each of them. "Esther had a way of making you think her ideas were yours. She would brighten up and say, 'That's a brilliant idea!'" "Esther would assign you a task, encourage you to run with it, and never micromanage. She was always there to provide guidance and support." "Esther is the kind of person who walks into a room and instantly brightens the atmosphere. She believed in me when I wasn't even sure of my own abilities." "I've made mistakes, and Esther would always tell me not to worry because it was part of the learning process." As she embarks on her new journey, we wish her every success in her career and in life. She leaves behind a lasting legacy, and she will be deeply missed.

@DTSK21 Joined @UDPK and other organizations of persons with disabilities in reflecting on the 20years since the UNCRPD came into being.
"The UN CRPD empowered me to know my rights and speak up for myself. As a person with intellectual disability, it has enabled me to have a choice and make my own decisions." Jane, a young self-advocate from KAIH. On 4th September, we commemorated the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the UN CRPD. We celebrated the milestones, reflected on the missed opportunities and forged the way forward to deal with the gaps. Jane's words captured the significance of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: enabling persons with disabilities to know their rights, exercise their autonomy and participate in decisions that affect their lives. From the different speeches it was noted that organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) have shaped the implementation of the UN CRPD at national, regional and global levels. OPDs have contributed to treaty negotiations, participated in state reporting processes, submitted alternative reports, informed the work of the CRPD Committee and used its recommendations to advance change within their countries. Their leadership has strengthened disability movements and ensured that the experiences and priorities of persons with disabilities influence laws, policies and programmes. It was emphasized that OPDs must continue to be partners in setting agendas, designing interventions, implementing programmes and monitoring progress. #CRPD @ADFSecretariat @IDA_CRPD_Forum

For persons with disabilities to access other rights and participate in society on an equal basis with others, they need to have assistive technologies. Globally, 2.5 billion (this number is increasing) people need one or more assistive technologies, yet access remains deeply unequal. In some settings, as few as 3% of those who need assistive technology can access it. On 2 September 2026, the United Nations General Assembly adopted its first resolution dedicated to access to #AssistiveTechnology. The resolution calls on governments to integrate assistive technology into health, education, labour, social protection and other national systems. The resolution gives persons with disabilities and their organizations a stronger advocacy tool to call for: • Affordable, appropriate and quality assistive products • Dedicated public financing for assistive technology • National priority assistive products lists based on people’s needs • Reliable assessment, fitting, repair and maintenance services • Investment in local production and innovation • Disaggregated data on need, availability and access • Inclusion of assistive technology in emergency and humanitarian response • Meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in all related decisions Find out more using the following link; atscalepartnership.org/news-… @_ATscale @ADFSecretariat @IDA_CRPD_Forum
