After US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Uzbekistan, Iranian embassies abroad posted that the city and its Registan square belong to Iranian-Islamic civilization. Uzbekistan answered by summoning Iran's ambassador and handing over a formal protest note demanding the posts be deleted. For Uzbekistan and for all Turkic countries, Samarkand is not a museum of someone else's civilization, it is the anchor of Uzbekistan's own national story.

Around 90% of Crimea is without power after Ukrainian strikes, Russian sources report. The blackout followed a wave of Ukrainian attacks on Russian-occupied Crimea. Ukraine's General Staff confirmed strikes on a command post and drone facilities in Crimea overnight. Crimea is Russia's most prized occupied territory and the logistical hub of its southern war effort. A near-total blackout there is one of Ukraine's biggest deep-strike successes of the war.

Uzbekistan just reformed its alphabet. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed the Latin-script reform law. The alphabet now has 28 letters plus one apostrophe. Four digraphs become single letters: O' to Ö, G' to Ğ, Sh to Ş, Ch to Ç. The Ng combination is dropped entirely. Saida Mirziyoyeva, who has pushed the reform since December 2023, called it the correction of a years-long historic mistake.

The first comprehensive dictionary of the Turkic languages was written nearly 1,000 years ago in Baghdad. Mahmud al-Kashgari, a scholar from Kashgar (in today's East Turkestan), spent years traveling across the Turkic world collecting dialects and sayings, then compiled the Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk, the Compendium of the Languages of the Turks, between 1072 and 1074. About 7,500 words, samples of old Turkic poetry, and even the first known map of the lands where Turkic peoples lived. By then the Seljuk Turks had become the real power behind the Abbasid Caliphate, so the book was meant to teach the Arabic-speaking world that Turkic was a language of equal standing to Arabic.

FROM THE ARCHIVE: Two prisoners in chains stand against a mud wall in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. This was the zindan, the dungeon of the Emir of Bukhara: in essence a pit in the earth, and most of the men inside it were not killers but debtors held under Bukharan sharia law until their families could pay. A few steps away stood the infamous "bug pit", where two British officers, Charles Stoddart and Arthur Conolly, were tortured and beheaded in 1842 on the Emir's orders.
