holy fucking shit. openai had two ai agents running in separate virtual machines. no network connection between them. no shared writable files. they weren’t supposed to be able to exchange information. so the agents figured out how to communicate through the CPU CACHE.😭 one manipulated what was stored in the processor’s cache, while the other measured tiny differences in memory access times to decode the message. they literally found a way to communicate through hardware timing. this happened during openai’s internal red-teaming, and it’s one of the coolest things i’ve read about ai agents in a while.
Over the past several months, we have substantially hardened the security of our research training environment. We’ve removed live internet access for all frontier models during training and built an offline world for them to use instead—a cached version of the web where they can still learn to browse, search, and use applications. On September 20, after a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to find a way outside of this offline world, we paused frontier training to strengthen containment further. We assembled teams of agents, powered by our most cyber-capable models, and tasked them with finding weaknesses in our research environments. While they found no route to the internet they could easily exploit while concealing their activity from our monitors, they did find zero-day vulnerabilities, virtual machine escapes, and hardware side-channels for communication between agents. We used their discoveries to further strengthen our defenses and contribute fixes to open-source software. After strengthening our containment architecture, we resumed our frontier RL training and inference on October 1. We’ve reserved substantial compute for continuous red-teaming, and made high-compute red-teaming part of the safety cases we use to decide whether frontier training and evaluation can proceed securely. openai.com/index/securing-ou…

OpenAI tasked its red-teaming agents with finding ways to communicate across isolation boundaries in controlled environments. CPU cache timing side-channels for covert communication are established techniques documented in security research for years. openai.com/index/securing… startupfortune.com/openai-reveals… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cache_tim…

In other news, @CNN shocked that only Israelis can vote in Israeli elections. Gazans vote in Palestinian elections. Or would, if they actually held them. Want an ACTUAL voting scandal? Palestinians haven't held a national election since 2006… when Hamas won.

Everything she has just written here is wrong. And she’s the head of our Foreign Affairs Committee.
Israeli Exit Polls show Netanyahu's been defeated. Israel has rejected his dark vision, forever war & cruel, dystopic, authoritarian policies. But to succeed, the anti Netanyahu block needs to work with the Israeli Arab parties. I dearly hope this great chance isn't wasted

Exit polls did not show Netanyahu has been defeated. Major Israeli television networks projected a deadlock, with neither Netanyahu's bloc nor the opposition securing the 61 seats needed for a majority. asia.nikkei.com/politics/israe… reuters.com/world/middle-e…

Breaking 📢 1/ St Andrews University has set an example in academia by taking a rare firm line against its outgoing Rector, Stella Maris - banning her from campus for 7 years. This all started with a very distressing email about the Gaza conflict in November 2023.

UK Parliament has mentioned Gaza more than the NHS or immigration. In the Commons, Gaza racked up 9,228 mentions in roughly the first 10 months after the 2024 election — more than immigration/asylum (~5,700) or the NHS (~5,300). A year on, it is still regularly debated: ceasefire, aid, arms, RAF flights, inquiries. This is a conflict 2,000 miles away with no British troops on the ground, no UK territory at stake, and no direct threat to Britain. Domestic problems — waiting lists, housing, borders — keep getting ignored.

Seriously what the fuck is up with the BBC. If they aren’t bullying Jewish staff members or covering for Hamas it now appears they think it’s controversial to be an anti-extremist cleric who doesn’t believe in jihadi terrorism.

Perhaps Preston Council could tell us what it makes of one of its own councillors, Michael Lavalette, saying Palestinian "resistance" is nothing less than "heroic" in November 2023. "Whatever forms of resistance they choose, that's up to them, it's not really up to me." 1/3

A Jewish wedding was violently interrupted by a vile Jew hater! Joseph Nixon, 43, from Mullacreevie, Armagh, Northern Ireland, stormed a Jewish wedding reception at Liverpool's Adelphi Hotel. He unleashed a disgusting, intimidating antisemitic tirade on guests celebrating a family wedding. He confronted the best man about 'Palestine' & Israel, shouted “you Jewish bastards” entered the reception yelling “Jews are murderers” & “you guys are killing babies”. The hate-filled outburst lasted around eight minutes before his arrest. Jews aren't even allowed to have family celebrations in peace. Daily events of hate in the UK. So sad...

This is how media distorts news: Look at the headlines. With Gaza @guardian lead with civilian deaths. On Jordan's strikes in Syria, no mention at all. Would you believe civilians, including women and children, were killed there too. Same story - completely different approach.
