E-bikes, e-scooters and other e-mobility devices are increasingly popular, but unsafe use—particularly of higher-powered devices—can put riders, pedestrians and others at risk. Public safety is a priority of mine, which is why I’m bringing forward a Notice of Motion next week to update Calgary’s e-mobility framework.
Calgary’s rules have not been comprehensively reviewed since 2019. My motion asks City Administration to clarify how devices are defined and where they can be used, and to recommend updates that improve safety while supporting affordable, convenient and enjoyable transportation and recreation.
I was asked as Deputy Mayor to give remarks to the Women’s Presidents Organization but I thought it would be wise to hand it over to Ward 2 Cllr Jennifer Wyness and boy was I right!
I couldn’t upload the full video but trust me, she crushed it and the crowd loved it!
I don’t think we have to fight over bike lanes, just a pause to make sure we do it right!
NEW. Ring the bell. The fight over bike lanes in Calgary has officially begun. calgaryherald.com/opinion/co… via @calgaryherald #ableg #abpoli #yyc #yyccc
Well said⬇️
Why build more bike lanes when the Province could tell us to rip them up?
It’s happening in Ontario and my Motion to Pause Bike Lane construction is so we can avoid potentially wasting Millions of Tax Payer Dollars here in Calgary.
“It’s pretty huge — I’d understand the outrage because we’re in an affordability crisis already,” said Ward 13 Coun. Dan McLean.
“We do have a huge amount of infrastructure to be built but a portion of the utility bill has always been put aside (for that purpose) but it looks like it hasn’t been done.”
McLean said there’s a need for some hikes in water rates but the scale of those proposed aren’t realistic, and other costs and city obligations should be cut to make fiscal room.
Those include affordable housing and downtown office conversion responsibilities that should be carried by other levels of government along with city staffing expenses, he said.
“Let’s find some savings on the other side,” said McLean.
“All these things (tax and fee hikes) together, they could be a huge hit to the homeowner and renter.”

Go Stamps, we still have a shot📣
City Council is looking at approving the LARGEST property tax hikes in decades: 15% in 2027, 10% in 2028, 7.6% in 2029 and 6% in 2030.
This is simply UNACCEPTABLE.
There needs to be a huge shift in priorities.
Focus on infrastructure, public safety, and core city services. We need to make cuts in all areas that are not core responsibilities of municipalities.
I will be advocating for and proposing spending cuts as we get closer to the budget deliberations.
Many members of council ran on fiscal responsibility, it's time to keep our commitment to Calgarians and focus Calgarians tax dollars on needs, not wants.

We might not all agree on things and you might not agree with all of us but we all get along and that’s saying something.
It's important that we gather at City Hall every year to remember and honor the over 80 Fallen Fighters that put their lives on the line to keep us all safe.
Always great to see Ward 13 residents Andy and Donna Sharman who tragically lost their son Derek the year I was elected
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The Proposed Property Tax Hike is Unacceptable!
Here’s what else I had to say
“Calgary taxpayers are not going to be happy and that’s an understatement. I think they are going to be outraged. This is a shock. I was shocked.”
McLean says the city has to pay for its essential services and other areas of city hall are going to have to take a haircut.
“If you’re going to spend here, you have got to cut there. We have to show where there is fat on the bone and we know it’s there.” Calgary Herald calgaryherald.com/opinion/co… via @calgaryherald
