After 10 years at SNY, I was part of the mass layoffs today
Thank you to all who followed along, including those who were critical and challenged me to be better. That’s a huge part of what makes this industry special
I may start a Substack. I may run for office
Stay tuned

Well, I was laid off by SNY this morning along with my whole editorital team and many others. Despite it being in my nature to say exactly what I’m thinking, I wanted to take a beat to collect my thoughts.
I need to start by expressing my gratitude for the people who hired me, guided me, worked for me and worked alongside me. Brad Como took a chance on someone who had never been on television, and later when I was hired full-time to join the digital team, my new coworkers put up with my asking questions like, “Wait, what’s linear?” I got to work for a company that covers the Mets, the team my grandparents cheered for, and as a 1986 baby, it felt like fate.
Over my eight-plus years one thing remained true: the people made SNY special. The content teams were small, but cared deeply about showing up for NY sports fans and for each other. I will miss the inside jokes, the thrill of breaking news, the collaboration, and having to care about storylines like Dicky vs. Richard Lovelady.
Most of all, I’m urging you to please hire these amazingly talented people, while continuing to support those still at SNY who are doing their best. This industry is a heartbreaker, but thank you for reading, following along, and to everyone who has reached out on a very hard day.

The folks laid off at SNY today were laid off for the same reason most of these sports network lay people off: Poor leadership.
These companies continue cutting off their legs to save the head then they’ll do the same thing in three years
Feel sorry for all the talent out of a job. ESPN did the same. Won’t be the last. Know your boss. Know their history.

I'm deeply saddened to hear about the layoffs at SNY. The staff - producers, editors, cameramen - are not only among the best at their craft, but some of the best *people* in the industry. It was a joy to be around them and to see their passion unfold on screen every week.

That "no" vote came from Pitt's Allen Greene. Big 12 also entirely abstained from voting for the proposal, causing it to come up short in the first DI Cabinet vote and entering the rescission process.

Some wild notes:
Take away a 1995 forfeit by Purdue and this is Valparaiso's first win over the Boilermakers since 1965. Valpo entered at 2-16 against the Boilers all-time.
It is Valpo's first win over a Big Ten team since 2004.
Purdue is 0-2 for the first time since 1976.

I've been getting messages all morning asking what the Liberman news means, here’s the context:
Avigdor Liberman announced today that he's willing to compromise on drafting the ultra-Orthodox in order to build a government without Netanyahu.
If you don't follow Israeli politics, that sentence probably means nothing, so here's who he is. He leads Yisrael Beytenu, a secular right-wing party whose base is Russian-speaking immigrants like him. He came to Israel from Soviet Moldova at 20 and has been around for thirty years, first as Netanyahu's chief of staff, then as foreign minister, defense minister, and finance minister. For most of that time he had one issue he would not move on: ultra-Orthodox men have to serve in the army like everyone else.
In 2019 he refused to budge on this, Netanyahu couldn't form a coalition, and we ended up voting over and over for a year.
That’s Liberman.
So when he says he'll compromise on this now, it's a big deal, and he says himself that it hurts.
Here's why he's doing it: We voted on October 27 and nobody won. Netanyahu's bloc got 53 seats, the opposition bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot, who used to run the army, got 48, and the two Arab parties got 19, more than they've ever had. You need 61. This week the Ashkenazi ultra-Orthodox party UTJ, which has 7 seats, refused to recommend Netanyahu because he promised them a draft exemption and never delivered. That left Eisenkot with 67 recommendations against Netanyahu's 46, and on Sunday the president will ask him to form a government.
The catch is that 67 recommendations isn't a government.
Nineteen of those seats are Ra'am and the Joint List, and Liberman has said flatly that his party will vote against any coalition that depends on them. If you take the Arab parties out, the only way to 61 is through the ultra-Orthodox, and the ultra-Orthodox won't come in if the draft law is on the table.
So Liberman dropped it.
He says his red lines now are that Netanyahu goes, that we don't end up with another election, and he won’t sit with anti-Zionist Arab parties who won’t condemn Hamas. Everything else is negotiable.
He's also betting that three or four Likud members will jump ship once there's an actual government to jump to.
UTJ's response so far is that they like the flexibility but nobody has sent them anything. So right now this is math, not a deal. But it's the first time in a week the math has worked.
