If nothing else Mastodon is introducing people into the whole Open Source tradition of trying to be enthusiastic about something really bad that doesn't work at all because you don't want to be rude to the maintainers and the thing you really want to use doesn't work anymore.

Well that didn’t take long.
To independent-minded voters: Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic.

I feel like everything I want to tweet is about what's wrong with Twitter, and everything I want to post on Mastodon is about what's wrong with Mastodon. – at Camden Town, London

The only silver lining is that they're mostly different things. Although I do see something of Elon in Mastodon's proud refusal to implement a "quote tweet" equivalent. – at Camden Town, London

I do think that Mastodon is going to have to relent on that if it gets big. Surely the whole point of a social network is that you can start discussion threads among your own friends, rather than having to participate in a global free-for-all. – at Barnet, London

If anyone cares, I've been dipping a toe into Mastodon as @DarienGS@mastodon.social. So far I haven't posted anything there of real significance or substance, but... well, you see where I'm going with this. – at Islington, London

Starting to feel about Musk & Twitter the same way I felt about Brexit & Britain: This is all fascinating, I just wish it wasn't happening on the social media platform I use.

A small number of things make a lot more sense now I have realised that Richard Simmons is not Russell Simmons. – at City of London, London

I know a lot about writing comedy, so I bought a giant, unprofitable shoe store. I fired many employees and decided to charge Stephen King $8 a month to come to my store. Things are going badly and I believe it is the fault of a left-leaning powerful clown in upstate NY.

The 21st century professional experience: you try out fifteen different hosted services, you find one that fits your workflow, you cough up for the annual subscription, and you just pray that you'll get a year or two out of it before it hits you with some bullshit like this:

The features you needed are normally still there, somewhere, in some form, but it's just a constant drain of having to refactor, retrain and redocument to someone else's timetable. The above shot is from @Mixlr, but @Zencastr recently switched everything around too. – at Camden Town, London

See also the unfortunate situation with Pantone colour in Illustrator and InDesign, though at least there you can choose to pay to keep your established workflow going, and retool at your own pace. – at Camden Town, London
My Mastodon experience so far seems to involve an awful lot of this:

I keep thinking hurry up Jack, get Bluesky up and running so we're not stuck with Mastodon. But also, take your time Jack, don't rush it and turn it into another Mastodon.

If history is any guide, all of my online posts complaining about how bad and pointless Mastodon is are a preamble to my spending a decade immersed in it.

Woke to message from my mate whose daughter disturbed a thief stealing their car last night. Second time this year. I asked if they called the police. They didn't bother, "what's the point?" A family & a little girl who know state doesn't solve problems anymore. Cheers Rishi.
