If I'm reading Matthew 6 correctly, the most significant things we'll do in our lives will go unnoticed by everyone except for God. And being noticed by God will be enough. Wow.

Saw a license plate this morning with the month and date of my birth. There must be some mistake, though: the guy that got out looked really old!

I thought my senior year of theology in college was going to be terrible. It became a year I’ve never forgotten. I had a professor named Dr. Wellum. He was young, passionate, and made theology come alive for me. When he left at the end of my Junior year for a well-known seminary in the States I was crushed. I’d been counting on one more year in his classroom. The college scrambled to find a replacement. At the last minute, they finally had to bring a professor out of retirement. He was elderly, quiet, and slow in his speech. I took one look and thought, “Oh no.” Then he opened his Bible. Every class he began with “a word from the Word.” Even now, I can hear the quiet crackle of his voice and picture the Bible in his hands. You could tell how precious it was to him by the way he held it. He took us through Esther. Not a book I had expected to find especially moving. But as he taught, God’s love, providence, and mercy came alive in those pages. That year showed me what a lifetime of treasuring Scripture could look like. Now decades later, I still remember how he held his Bible and treasured Christ's Word. And I still want to love like that.

CT editors (Nov. 6, 1970): “It is always wrong to gossip about things we know to be untrue. This is lying. It is equally wrong to gossip about things of which we are not certain. This is pawning the truth. And it is also wrong to spread damaging information that we know to be true, unless there are compelling reasons for doing so.”
