25 squares. One completed roadmap. π
When I created my Foundations Cyber Career Roadmap Bingo Board, I wanted something different from the traditional cybersecurity roadmap.
Something that made learning feel manageable, especially for career changers like me.
Coming from atmospheric science and data analytics, I've been building on my existing skills while learning new ones, one step at a time.
Today, I completed my final square: Try a beginner CTF challenge. π©
I captured my first flag during the TryHackMe Downtime CTF with my solo team, Packet Poltergeist! π»
And just like that, my Foundations board is officially COMPLETE! π
I created this roadmap to document my journey and help others find their own starting point.
Now I can say I didn't just create it. I completed it.
The journey continues. From Storm to SOC. βοΈπ

Today: Audit Your Public Footprint.
Have you ever searched your own name online to see what information is publicly available?
Your social media profiles, old accounts, photos, and personal details may reveal more than you realize.
Take a few minutes to review your digital footprint.
Search your name, check your public social media profiles, and look for information you no longer want publicly accessible.
Consider updating privacy settings, removing outdated information, and limiting what you share.
Small changes can help reduce the information scammers use for phishing, impersonation, and social engineering.
One small step. One day safer. π

Eventually, the evidence started coming together.
I identified the download utility and URL, mapped execution and persistence techniques to MITRE ATT&CK, and decoded a Base64 string.
And there it was. My very first CTF flag!
THE GHOST WITH THE MOST! π»π
What are the odds?!

The irony of a team named Packet Poltergeist capturing a flag called The Ghost With the Most during Halloween season isn't lost on me. π
Three days. Three completed activities. Three raffle tickets. One unforgettable first flag.
My biggest takeaway? Persistence matters, but so does knowing when to change your approach.
Thank you, @tryhackme, for the experience!

Next was Quiet as the Grave, a threat-hunting exercise using Splunk.
My first attempt wasn't my best.
Neither was my second.
On my third attempt, I scored 999 points!
I worked through the attack chain, connected the evidence, and got more comfortable distinguishing attempted activity from confirmed actions.

This challenge tested my patience.
I struggled with the lab environment, restarted multiple times, and spent longer than I expected trying to find the right evidence.
There was a point when I genuinely considered stopping.
Instead, I changed my approach, narrowed my searches, and kept investigating.

Then came Handbook for the Recently Compromised, my first traditional CTF challenge.
Windows event logs. PowerShell. Sysmon. MITRE ATT&CK. A hidden flag.
It was labeled Easy.
Let's just say I learned that Easy doesn't necessarily mean easy when you're doing something for the first time. π

First up: Repossessed, a SOC Simulator investigation.
I had to review security alerts, investigate suspicious activity, and make decisions based on the available evidence.
It reinforced something I've been practicing: don't rush to a conclusion just because an alert looks suspicious.

My first cybersecurity CTF experience is officially in the books!
I participated in TryHackMe's Downtime 2026 as a solo team called Packet Poltergeist.
Over three days, I completed three activities, captured my first CTF flag, and earned three Tombstone raffle tickets.
Here's how it went. π§΅
Day 25 of #31DaysSafer π
Today: Build a 3-2-1 Backup.
What would happen if your phone or computer suddenly stopped working? Would you be able to recover your important files?
Device failure, theft, accidental deletion, and ransomware can all put your data at risk.
Take a few minutes to review how you're backing up your files.
Consider keeping multiple copies of your important data, using different storage options, and storing at least one copy offsite.
Don't forget to check that you can actually restore your files when needed.
A good backup plan can help you recover when something goes wrong.
One small step. One day safer. π
