Dear 🇬🇧, Please read - this NHS scandal potentially affects you all. 🧵 Having studied the data, just released, from the @RCPhysicians members' survey on PAs, I couldn't be more disgusted by the lack of probity, honesty & fairness of those who lead my Royal College. 1/n

How come data be so misrepresented by @RCPhysicians before a vote and halfway through the vote when the actual data is released is so damning that it could potentially change the way people vote. Doctors up and down the country have been voting based on misleading data and the Royal College only released the data because they were forced to by a group of us through social media pressure. The senior leadership of @RCPhysicians is rotten and needs to go.

I still probably discuss one in every three cases that I do with one of the other consultant cardiologists in the Cath Lab next door, and similarly they will discuss cases with me. I will take many of my cases to the wider group meeting involving cardiac surgeons too. This is after 24 years qualification as a doctor and 12 years as a consultant. The fact that some PAs say that they discuss cases with their GP once every couple of months frightens me. This is not good for patients. It's time to define a tight scope of practice- the @TheBMA document is an excellent start.
I hit my peak confidence after 2 yrs as a doctor THEN I did A&E & GP jobs, saw undifferentiated patients & my confidence⬇️ ❌Diagnoses presented atypically ❌Well patients had abnormal results ❌Algorithms didn’t fit Only then, did I appreciate how RISKY & complex medicine is!

🔴 NEW: IT blunder allowed PAs at Calderdale and Huddersfield to "illegally" prescribe drugs inc opiates and sedatives PAs prescribed oxycodone, codeine, lorazepam, diazepam and midazolam, despite being "instructed they are not legally able to prescribe” telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/02…

This demonstrates what a disastrous decision it is to use the doctor’s regulator, the GMC, to also regulate PAs and AAs. We are again calling on members of the house of lords to put a stop to this when they have a chance next week (2/2) bma.org.uk/bma-media-centre/…

The GMC continuing to blur the lines between doctors and PAs is no longer tenable. PAs are not doctors and are not medically trained. The lived reality is that this is causing significant confusion for patients. (1/2)
🧵The updated #GoodMedicalPractice2024 uses the term ‘medical professionals’ as a collective term for doctors, physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs), rather than listing out each individual role for every reference. We haven't removed doctors from the standards. The majority of our communications, including direct correspondence to patients and others about regulatory matters, will always be tailored to refer to each role individually gmc-uk.org/professional-stan…
