New home of @David_Charts. Armchair economist, sci-fi fan, impressed by good data viz. Node in the vast left wing conspiracy. Facts have a liberal bias.

Summarizing CBO, Fed and other analyses of Trump's truly awful economic policies, so you have it all in one place for sharing. 🔴Bottom 80% are expected to be worse off from the combination of Trump's tax bill (OBBBA) and tariffs. 1/ budgetlab.yale.edu/research/…

We just got Usual Weekly Earnings from BLS this morning. 10th, median, and 90th percentile real wages are negative over the past year. For the 90th percentile worker real wages are falling roughly at the rate of the peak of the 2022 inflation wave, maybe more. Brutal.
Full-time wage and salary workers median weekly earnings are $1,232 in 3rd quarter 2026 #BLSData bls.gov/news.release/archive…

Trump administration is attempting to cut federal spending by targeting ~10M defaulted student-loan borrowers via wage garnishment?? Is Trump trying to just hand government over the Dems in 2028?? Perplexing move here tbh.

This a good piece on what’s driving nurse turnover at hospitals. Most of the factors are shaped by the employer (hospitals) and reflect monopsony power. Low pay drives turnover. Understaffing drives turnover. Even safety is shaped in part by the hospital—patients get irate when they wait too long. Good anecdote at the end of how Emory cut turnover by boosting pay.

People are obviously having real problems with the cost of energy and long-term housing shortages, but I don't think the level of negativity compared to 2008 can possibly be explained in purely material terms. slowboring.com/p/americans-n…

A couple of slides showing where the economy is now vs. when Trump started. Red indicates we're worse off than January 2025.

It’s very important to reject this tradeoff presented in today’s NYT cover story—that governments can’t address the needs of its citizens without angering bond markets. Set aside the (highly debated) claim that gov’t spending crowds out private investment by lifting interest rates. Governments can confront the affordability problem in myriad ways *outside* of gov’t spending. Targeted price controls, antitrust investigations, price-gouging regulations, the use of government countervailing buying power, the threat of government provisioning. The list goes on. Ditto for raising real wages, another source of social unrest: unionization efforts, raising the minimum wage, eliminating non competes, ending mandatory arbitration clauses in employee contracts, merger enforcement. There are no excuses. Take care of your damn people.

The biggest political divide in America isn't "left" versus "right." It's the American people versus the oligarchy.

if a wise oracle told you in September 2021 that pending home sales in the US would fall to an all-time low in September 2026, you'd be like 'man, that must be a a really rough recession...' but somehow, nope:
Stunning. Pending home sales in the US fell to an all-time low in September
