I was a freshman in a dining hall in Tucson that morning. A few years later I was in Iraq, kitting up at last light.

Esperanza Chavez was 25. The Salt Lake County DA's office asked for just $5,000 bail for the repeat violent offender who assaulted her, in a filing warning she could face further abuse or death. A judge set $2,000. He walked out and months later killed her. Espie deserved better.
