Our gorgeous daughter Nora was born 11/03/21 at 4:15 AM. She has an extra chromosome for good measure, and that's just how we like her. THANK YOU @DSAInfo, @PositiveaboutDS (and others) for the work you do in affirming our daughter's life. We adore her. She's perfect.

I’ve decided Twitter isn’t for me. Too toxic, too addictive, not good for my health. So I’m taking a hiatus - at least while I train to be a priest at Wycliffe Hall in Oxford. Friends have my contact details if you need them. Peace x

Sign on the entrance to the Children’s Ward at @PooleHospital - guess which parent is crossed out? All throughout Covid, the NHS has treated dads like we are completely irrelevant to our child’s care, and I’m getting sick of it.

We told ourselves for decades that free markets and liberal societies create strong incentives for meritocratic advancement in society and hold governments accountable. Can we now put that myth to bed?

“‘Existential gratitude’ was associated with higher “spiritual well-being”.... This finding is important considering that gratitude and spirituality have been shown to be protective factors against both anxiety and depression.” theatlantic.com/family/archi…

As a dad, I’m learning that there are *hundreds* of factors that tilt the burden of parental responsibility onto the mother. It’s so invisible and subtle that you get to about 6 months and feel like someone’s played a trick on you. I’m exhausted and I’m still doing less.

Just started our Disability Living Allowance application for Nora and OH my days... what a lot of work to do for not a lot of money.

So frustrating. Sure Start was making such positive headway on some of our thorniest social challenges- and we just scrapped it in the Austerity era without a second thought.
NEW: At their peak, Sure Start centres prevented 13,000 hospitalisations a year among 11- to 15-year-olds – leading to savings that offset around a third of its cost. Read our new briefing, funded by @NuffieldFound here. > ifs.org.uk/publications/1557… Thread [1/4]

Absolutely outstanding contribution to the #SaveTheParish debate by @missionalfrog. I agree. We need Bishops to be pastoral leaders, not executive managers; and to claw back the missional energy of local clergy in their historical parochial role.

Such a good thread. 👏👏👏👏
Single and married people can offer one another rich depth if we push past our own insecurities and get outside our comfort zones. 🧵

The phrase "involuntarily celibate" is an oxymoron - a cruel, twisted misunderstanding of what celibacy really is: which is a joyous, fulfilled calling that brings life.

Is it a surprise that the men who coined the term "Incel" are of the first generation to have been brought up on an endless diet of free, unaccountable porn - fed like ducks for foie gras on violent, coercive sex?

Normally, extremists emerge in society as a hateful negation of everything we value. In this case, the "incels" are a hateful affirmation. Society tells us our life is not worth living without sex. That is a culture of death.

Society never fought the war on digital porn. We just woke up one day, conquered, refusing to talk about it. A literal invasion of the body snatchers took place and we all just carry on like nothing's happened.

I’m very nervous about Christians being bounced into a “works” gospel on climate change: eat less beef, drive less, don’t go on holiday etc. All of these things are necessary and good, but won’t save the world. Massive, structural change and miracles are what’s needed.

Such a crucial article. Where are all the youth workers, will lead to a church with no young people. We must reverse the decline. We’re losing a generation again? Churches are desperate for youth workers. So why can’t they find any? premierchristianity.com/opin… – at South West, England

The key misunderstanding of (historic) Christian ethics in a liberal culture comes from secular liberals tending to see all “sin” as requiring punishment or condemnation. Anything we are “free to do” must be good; and anything that’s “bad” must be banned or ostracised.

The best thing clergy & churches can do on climate change is prepare their congregations to commit themselves to the coming mass movement for change; and / or prophetically call it into being. Sermons telling people to drive less will have the reverse intended effect.

The church has a good track record of quietly offering a critical mass of demand for “tipping point” issues like Fairtrade, International Aid, etc. That’s our power. Not lumbering individual consciences with the burden of saving the world.
