India's updated Land Warfare Doctrine 2026: what is reported so far
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh released the updated doctrine on 23 Oct at the close of the Army Commanders' Conference in New Delhi. The Ministry has not published the text, so the picture comes from media summaries.
• Land power: The doctrine reportedly keeps land forces central to decisive outcomes despite growth in air, maritime, space and cyber capability.
• Jointness: It stresses multi-domain integration and breaking down operational silos.
• Uncrewed systems: A significant section covers drones, loitering munitions and counter-drone measures, with manned-unmanned teaming.
• Contested environments: It plans for operating under degraded communications.
• Training: A five-year multi-domain training roadmap, a three-level AI skills programme for officers, and drone operation as a secondary skill across about 1.2 million personnel.
• Operation Sindoor: Cited as a reference point for synergy, surveillance and unmanned systems.
Not yet public: theatre commands, nuclear thresholds, Pakistan-specific provisions and any limited-war concept. None of these appears in the reporting.
The material points to an evolutionary shift toward cheaper unmanned systems at the tactical level and tighter joint integration. For Pakistan, the planning implications are short-range air defence, counter-UAS and electronic warfare resilience. Any firmer judgement needs the text.
