This should have been a moment for the community to reflect on their own rates and realize they are most likely underpricing their work instead of dunking on someone who has been setting their commission rate however they see fit for them.
We can be better, we need to be better.

Art repost!
I wish i had the opportunity to draw in this style more, but i feel like there's not as much demand for it as my fully rendered stuff.
Looks awesome on shirts though!

I usually let this topic pass without saying anything.. but hereβs my long winded hot take. Less about keychains and more about product manufacturing as a whole.
The base of the issue here to me has always been research. Inability or unwillingness to research and trial/error manufacturers. Maybe because Iβm old but I was taught how to research in elementary school, I just have a diff perspective.
Most artists use Alibaba. They have public reviews, ratings, you can see their factory certifications etc., Donβt know how to sign up? Google it. Thereβs YouTube videos for everything. How do you pick colors? Materials? Look it up. What is a technical flat? I have books that explain how to draw up design documents. Buy some or look online. How do I communicate my design efficiently? Look it up. Get a sample made. Yes, it costs money. But thatβs how it works? Iβve spent thousands of dollars over time getting things sampled before going into production. EVEN from manufacturers recommended to me by friends.
You could actually become a part of your art community.. Iβm in countless art discords where people give reviews good/bad on manufacturers etc., if you havenβt made any connections or friends in your own community, I donβt think itβs up to strangers to make your business work for you.
Part of running a business IS doing research. Just asking someone who has already done that imo seems like you arenβt willing to even invest the time to find out if you like working with that manufacturer or not.
Iβve moved manufacturers over the years, Iβve gotten recommendations from FRIENDS, not just walked up to some random person and asked them where did they get their stuff made because I like quality. Itβs just bizarre and entitled.
Iβve had people ask me for my manufacturers and I told them I wasnβt comfortable sharing and theyβve threatened me and said they can just reverse engineer my products if they wanted. Iβm like sure ?
Iβve recommended manufacturers to people and theyβve had negative experiences with the same manufacturer Iβve had good experiences with.
Iβve had manufacturers quality seriously decrease after they had an influx of people due to recommendations. To the point of my sales rep and even some of their staff leaving and going to another manufacturer.
I have been scammed by manufacturers, and gotten thousands of dollars worth of merch thatβs INCORRECT. From manufacturers that I previously recommended. Itβs all a risk one way or the other. At the end of the day, only you are responsible for your production and promises you make to your customers.
People donβt know how to research their own manufacturers and think if they get the same manufacturer they can produce things the same way. The reality is a lot of manufacturers have similar processes, if you take the time to make a sample youβd know how itβs going to come out before you spend money on production.
You donβt know what peoples technical documents look like, how they give instructions to the manufacturer. How many samples they go through to get the final one.. are you just vibe coding your sample or are you actually looking at swatch fabrics, printing methods etc., I come from a professional merchandise background. Your documentation makes the biggest difference in your final product more than anything else.
This has been a conversation in this community for a decade. It always frustrates me.. the answer is do research, build community around the things that are important to you. If thatβs transparency then make friends with artists who value that and share amongst yourselves.
Anyways, best of luck to all the creators out there.
Lowkey I always say Vograce just to get people to stop asking :^)
Hot take but it's okay to gatekeep your manufacturers. Companies won't tell you where they order shi why should artists? π€π€·ββοΈ
Some people are really angry at this π«
If someone wants to share their manu thats completely up to them and I fully support it! The whole point of the tweet is that nobody should feel pressured to share if they don't want to

Really pleased to say I was the project management lead for the VeXpo app project, working with @Zeryther for coding and functionality and @Melonturtle_ for look and feel.
Iβm really happy with how it turned out, it was a lot of work especially as I was also responsible for all of the content input (over 300+ vtuber tags and ~340 events amongst other things!) but everyone seemed to really love it and find it useful so that made it all worth it in the end.
Having been to many other conventions and having used their apps with mixed thoughts on usability and complexity I wanted to make sure ours was both very simple in UX but also packed a lot of detail and helpful information that could be accessed via searches. I think @Zeryther managed to achieve this pretty much perfectly and I was super pleased with both how everything worked and the amount of features we managed to incorporate by release.
I have to give a huge recommendation to @Zeryther and @conhonapp in general, theyβve been nothing short of amazing to work with. Incredibly polite, responsive, and professional throughout our period working together and no task was too small or problematic for them. Whether it was 2PM or 2AM I could count on them to get back to me and I could not ask for someone more pleasant to work alongside. Truly stellar service that I would recommend to anyone.
Iβm looking forward to seeing how the app can be developed in the future as well, there was a lot of really cool suggestions from the community that I canβt wait to discuss for next year! Watch this space!
