#VPDNews: A 34-year-old man remains in custody after allegedly assaulting two tourists last night.
On October 21 at approximately 11:00 p.m., Vancouver Police officers on routine patrol witnessed an altercation between a suspect and two people near Abbott and West Cordova streets.
Officers immediately intervened and safely handcuffed the suspect.
The two victims were tourists from Calgary walking back from the Bruno Mars concert. The suspect allegedly punched the male victim on the arm with a sharp object, believed to be glass. The force of that contact pushed the female victim into a nearby light pole.
The male victim sustained a cut to his left forearm and was treated at the scene by Emergency Health Services.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Derek Dale Driscoll, had two outstanding warrants, one in relation to an alleged breach of probation order and one for failing to attend court.
He was arrested, transported to jail, and has now been charged with assault, assault causing bodily harm, and assault with a weapon.
Driscoll remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

#VPDNews: A 48-year-old man from New Mexico has been charged after allegedly entering a Vancouver home early Wednesday morning, where he was discovered by the resident.
On October 21, 2026, around 3:45 a.m., a woman was asleep in a residence near Atlin Street and East 29th Avenue when she awoke to find an unknown man reportedly rummaging through her personal belongings.
The woman pretended to be asleep until the man left the room, then locked her bedroom door and called the Vancouver Police Department. She reported that she lived with roommates and believed the man was still inside the home.
Officers quickly responded to the residence and located the suspect on the second floor. When they attempted to speak with him, he ran into a nearby bedroom. The officers observed him attempting to jump out of the window, and he was then taken into custody.
The suspect refused to identify himself. Officers located identification belonging to a resident of New Mexico and have since been able to confirm his identity.
Daniel Joseph Campbell, 48, has been charged with one count of break-and-enter and one count of obstructing a peace officer. Campbell remains in custody.

#VPDNews: The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is seeking witnesses after a 77-year-old woman was injured in an unprovoked stranger assault on Vancouver's west side.
The senior was walking near Cambie Street and West Broadway when she was intentionally shouldered and knocked to the ground by a man walking in the opposite direction at about 6:30 p.m. yesterday. After the assault, the suspect continued walking eastbound on the north side of Broadway. He did not say anything or offer assistance to the senior.
A witness called police and remained with the victim until officers arrived. The woman suffered a cut to her head and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The suspect is described as a Black man with an athletic build, between 20 and 30 years old. He was wearing navy-blue pants, a navy-blue rain jacket with the hood up, and dark-coloured headphones.
Anyone who witnessed the assault or has dash-cam, CCTV, or cell phone video of the incident is asked to contact the Vancouver Police Department.

#VPDNews: Long-term crime statistics are showing positive results of proactive policing in Vancouver.
“Today we are sharing crime trend statistics and inviting media to report on them so the public knows exactly what is happening when it comes to crime in Vancouver,” said Senior Deputy Chief Constable Howard Chow.
“When it comes to the perception of public safety, the facts matter.”
Violent crime, property crime, and overall crime rates all declined overall between 2002-2025.
Additionally:
▶️Statistics Canada’s preferred method of report crime trends is the Crime Severity Index (CSI). The CSI is important because it takes into account the severity of crimes, and doesn’t equate, for example, a shoplifting incident with a violent robbery.
▶️Vancouver in 2025 had a record-low Overall Crime Severity Index (CSI) - the lowest on record since Statistics Canada started keeping track in 1998. In the last 10 years Vancouver’s Overall CSI dropped by 22.3%, compared to an increase of 4.2% across the nation.
▶️Vancouver in 2025 had record-low Non-Violent CSI scores – the lowest on record since Statistics Canada started keeping track in 1998.
▶️The only reason Vancouver in 2025 didn’t also have a record-low Violent CSI score is the Lapu-Lapu mass casualty incident (11 second-degree murder charges).
While it is true that crime has increased so far in 2026 compared to last year, the reality is that the most serious crimes such as murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, commercial break-and-enter, residential break-and-enter, and auto theft are decreasing. The most severe types of crime are down and the VPD is projecting all three CSI categories will drop through 2026 to the lowest ever recorded levels.
“We are making progress. It’s not an accident. It’s not a coincidence. It’s because the VPD is policing effectively and investing in the right technologies and policing strategies like Project Barrage and the creation of District 5 to address public safety concerns,” Chow concluded.
“Of course we know there is always more work to be done. The VPD remains committed to ensuring the public safety of Vancouver’s residents, businesses and visitors.”

#VPDNews: The Vancouver Police Department is appealing for witnesses and dash-cam footage after a man’s pant leg was set on fire in an unprovoked attack early this morning.
At approximately 12:43 a.m., the 57-year-old man was sitting alone on a park bench near Beach Avenue and Davie Street when an unknown suspect approached him. Without warning or provocation, the suspect threw a liquid accelerant onto the victim's pant leg and ignited it with a lighter before fleeing the scene. No words or threats were exchanged prior to the assault.
The victim successfully stamped out the fire. He was not injured in the attack. Police conducted an immediate search of the area, but the suspect was not located.
The suspect was described as approximately five foot eight inches to five foot ten inches tall with an average build. He was wearing dark clothing and white around his neck.
"This was a completely unprovoked, random attack, and we urgently need anyone with information or dash-cam footage to call the non-emergency line immediately at 604-717-3321," said Constable Darren Wong.

#VPDNews: Vancouver Police Department officers arrested a woman yesterday for allegedly assaulting a one-year-old baby and his mother.
The mother was walking with her baby in a stroller along East Hastings Street near Princess Avenue at about 4:40 p.m. when she was approached by an unknown woman. The mother told police the woman demanded money and during the altercation, the suspect grabbed her baby by the hair. No one was physically injured.
Immediately after that incident, CCTV cameras captured a woman matching the suspect’s description approaching an unidentified man and punching him in the face. There was an altercation and the suspect left.
About 10 minutes later, police received a report of a woman matching the suspect’s description attempting to steal alcohol from a nearby liquor store.
Police attended and arrested the suspect. She was taken to jail and then to hospital for a pre-existing condition. Police are requesting assault charges and a warrant be issued upon her release from hospital.

On the morning of December 4, 2024, Constables Opinder Kooner, Riley Nelmes, Brian Rogger, and Michael Wu responded to a 911 call reporting that a man had entered a downtown restaurant and stolen liquor and knives.
When they arrived moments later, the suspect had entered a convenience store across the street, where he stabbed a female employee in the head, back, and hand. The injured woman was trapped in the store with her attacker, along with a second employee.
The officers entered the store and attempted to de-escalate. When that failed, a constable used a conducted energy weapon to no effect. As the man began to approach the two women, lunging at them with the knife, another constable discharged his firearm and stopped the threat.
Medical care was brought in for the victims. Officers provided immediate first aid, but the suspect succumbed to his injuries.
For their courageous and decisive actions to stop an active deadly threat, and save two women from further harm, the following officers were awarded the Chief Constable’s Citation: Constables Opinder Kooner, Riley Nelmes, Brian Rogger, and Michael Wu.

#VPDNews: The Vancouver Police Department is appealing for video evidence to help investigate two separate violent incidents that occurred in the Downtown Eastside over the weekend.
On Friday, just after 2 p.m., a female tourist was randomly pushed from behind into traffic near Carrall Street and East Pender Street. Fortunately, she was not injured.
The suspect fled the area before police arrived and is described as:
- An Indigenous woman, 40 to 50 years old.
- Approximately 5-foot-8 with a medium build, medium complexion, and sunken cheeks.
- Having lip piercings.
- Wearing a black toque, black jacket, black pants, and black combat boots.
On Sunday, at approximately 11:40 p.m., a man was stabbed multiple times in the neck near Main Street and East Hastings Street. His injuries have since been determined to be non-life-threatening.
The suspect remains at large and is described as:
- A Caucasian man, 30 to 40 years old.
- Approximately 6-foot with a stocky build and a bald head.
- Wearing an orange shirt and tan pants.
"People in the Downtown Eastside are often reluctant to come forward as witnesses," said Constable Darren Wong. "Each incident this weekend occurred in an area where limited video surveillance was available. Video footage can help identify suspects and protect victims when witnesses are too afraid to speak up."
Both incidents remain under investigation. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed either incident, or motorists who may have relevant dash-cam footage from these areas at the times listed, to contact the Vancouver Police Department's non-emergency line at 604-717-3321.

#VPDNews: Yesterday at 2:38 p.m., Vancouver Police initiated a Code 3 pursuit after observing a distraught female passenger in a vehicle.
Officers conducting proactive patrols near E. Hastings Street and Dunlevy Avenue first noticed the parked, occupied BMW with Alberta license plates.
Inside, a front-seat female passenger appeared visibly distraught.
Concerned for her safety and well-being, officers activated their emergency lights and sirens to conduct a welfare check. The vehicle immediately sped away. Due to the perceived threat to the passenger, a police pursuit was authorized.
Multiple police vehicles pursued the BMW into downtown Vancouver, where the suspect drove at high speeds, weaved into oncoming traffic, and showed a complete disregard for public safety.
The pursuit concluded near Waterfront Station after officers successfully utilized a vehicle interdiction tactic and executed a high-risk takedown. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.
A 44-year-old Alberta man was arrested and is facing possible charges of forcible confinement, drug possession, and dangerous driving.
The female passenger is cooperating with investigators.
The file remains under active investigation.

#VPDNews: Crown Counsel has approved a charge of assault after Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officers witnessed a man push an 86-year-old woman to the ground in the Downtown Eastside.
The incident happened Saturday afternoon on Hastings Street near Columbia Street while VPD District 5 officers were conducting proactive patrols.
Officers saw the man allegedly shove the elderly woman, who was using a walker for mobility. The woman fell to the ground and suffered a cut to her forehead. Officers immediately arrested the suspect while the woman received medical treatment from EHS. The senior was later transported to hospital. She is expected to make a full recovery.
“Proactive policing works,” said Sergeant Adam Donaldson. “In the absence of video evidence capturing the incident, the next best thing was the officers’ observations, which led to a swift arrest.”
Felix Harris, 40, has been charged with one count of assault.
