❗️ A Chinese spyware kit called uCreator hides in repackaged Telegram, WeChat and GCash apps.
In Telegram it can read chats and grab the 2FA password in cleartext, researcher Ovi found.
Its makers left their backend and the names of ~3 dozen developers on an open GitLab server.

This is so intelligent, I want to cry: The 140 seats won by the student opposition against Serbia's nationalist government party will be taken up not by students, but by academics, professors & public figures from pre-chosen pool of 250 experts, selected by student plenums.

For those who might have missed it the first time around, here’s my The Godfather Part II thread on how Meyer Lansky, the legendary Jewish American mobster, inspired the character of Hyman Roth.
In The Godfather Part II, the villain Hyman Roth was inspired by the real-life Jewish gangster Meyer Lansky - one of the most powerful criminals in the history of America. A man the US Justice Department once described as the “financial genius of organized crime.”
He was a quiet strategist who helped turn the mafia into a modern business empire. Known as “the Mob’s Accountant,” he built his reputation on gambling, money laundering, and financial cunning rather than brute force.
From Prohibition-era rackets in New York to the casinos of pre-Castro Cuba, Lansky helped shape the mob’s rise into a transnational force. He was rarely the man in the spotlight, but behind the scenes, he was one of the most cunning and ruthless criminal minds of the 20th century - which made him the perfect real-life model for the archrival to Michael Corleone....🧵 (1/8)

The character of Frank, played by James Caan in Thief, was partly based on real-life professional thief John Santucci, who served as a consultant on the film. Santucci also appears in the movie as Sergeant Urizzi, the corrupt Chicago vice cop who harasses and shakes down Frank.
Santucci, who had only recently been paroled, trained Caan in the methods of a professional thief and supplied the production with his own collection of burglary tools. Under his supervision, Caan spent weeks learning to operate specialized drills, hydraulic pullers and high-temperature thermal lances. The safes Caan breaks into were real, worth thousands of dollars, and the tools and techniques were completely authentic.

This paper answers why confident idiots run the world.
Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy.
It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.”
they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception.
And the results are wild.
participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile.
they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence.
the paper revealed a brutal paradox:
the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain.
if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing.
this creates a dangerous systemic loop.
the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions.
meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse.
top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else.
they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add.
we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence.
the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't.
the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.
