Parents of players who want to play high level college baseball.
I always hear players say they are going to take a season off to train.
That sounds great, but it almost never works.
It doesn't work because players who legitimately have a chance to play high level college or professional baseball never stop training. They train year-round for many years. They train and play as many competitive games as possible year-round. They learn to do it all and simply sacrifice more hours, weeks, months and years than the kids who conveniently think they want to be high level players.
For high-level college and professional players, fun is doing things others would consider work.
College baseball players are older, more experienced, stronger, more polished and more athletic because of COVID eligibility and the portal. High level college players play fall baseball, spring baseball and summer baseball. Yes, they play basically year round. They also train year round in the weight room, at the track, and focus on caloric intake and supplementation.
If your son wants to be a high level performing baseball athlete he needs to manage many responsibilities simultaneously. These responsibilities include a year round strength and conditioning program. Playing as many competitive games as possible. High school pitchers should be getting between 70 (Freshmen) and 100 (Senior) competitive innings per calendar year. Hitters should get approximately 250+ competitive at bats per calendar year. While doing all of those things, he also needs to be a dynamic student. Yes, high level college athletes are expected to be high level students.
The requirements for achieving greatness are designed to weed out the unwilling and competitive athletics are designed to be cruel, rude and nasty.
The best aren't committed part time or conveniently to the requirements of being a performing athlete.

I played for this man for 3 years. He came to my wedding and traveled to watch me play in the big leagues many times. He gave me a D1 scholarship when no one else wanted a 5-11 175lb catcher from Florida. He meant more to me than any other coach I’ve ever played for, and that is saying a lot.
If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have had the mental toughness, mentality, or grit this game demands of you in order to play at this baseballs highest level.
I have a quote I like to tell my players.
“If you don’t like it, play better.”
The game of baseball is strictly merit based. You have to earn it. Even at the youth level.
Ages 12 and below, I’m good with everyone playing and learning the game. Above that age, then you have to earn your spot. There is a point where the player has to choice to work for it, or not. Puberty is the time that it generally happens in my opinion.
As a side note, if your kid isn’t the best player when he’s 12, don’t panic. Development takes time, and once puberty hits, the physical change happens quick.
RIP Coach Robe.

To the “too cool for school” high school kids who sit on the bench and don’t support their teammates…these are the dugouts at UTSA & Ohio State. Not a single player other than the pitcher and catcher sitting on the bench…
