Your “s” has a social life. The same acoustic feature can mean different things in different communities. Irene Yi explores how tiny details in speech shape our impressions of a speaker. Film: a synthetic sound unfolding into its spectrum. @OrukLabs

people born blind can hear you smiling, can you? In a small study, listeners who had never seen a smile could hear it in a voice. Their facial muscles responded, too. Hear the same voice with and without a digital smile. @OrukLabs

it's time your speech models actually understood you voice is the only interface fast enough to keep up with your agents, robots, and claude code, but they need more context. @OrukLabs transcribes text, tone-of-voice, emphasis, intent, and emotion

Voice AI is getting the words right, but it still doesn't understand tone. We paused our PhDs at Stanford to build @OrukLabs, backed by a16z @speedrun. We train speech models to understand what you say AND how you say it. DM me for preview access to our most powerful model yet

step aside @nvidia, there's a new top dog in speech models: orukeet. trained by @OrukLabs, optimized by @hoid_ai, and available on day zero in @openwhispr (100k+ downloads). 25 languages. Open weights + code.

Replying to @OrukLabs
@OrukLabs works with the signal directly to detect emotions. We build our own dataset to label emotions in the fastest and most efficient way. We of course have amazing performance at pure transcription. Are you able to recognize the iconic audio track ? (hint: it contains anger)

Silence is a terrible way to detect the end of speech. Humans use at least seven acoustic cues. Zero present: listeners take the turn 5% of the time. All seven: 65%. Transcripts delete every cue. Then we call a 500 ms timer "speech understanding."

language is a superposition over possible meanings we're testing quantum architectures for speech models at @OrukLabs one challenge is that quantum memory can hold the answer but still lack a way to reveal it. our preprint shows how entanglement itself can store information.

Listening is the mind reaching into the future.
"Wait your turn" is not how conversation works. Your brain starts drafting a reply ~2.4 seconds before the other person finishes. Listening is prediction. Voice assistants that wait for silence before thinking are built on a fake model of speech.

We learned something big about emotion from a very small brain 🪰
we trained a fruit fly to understand emotion We created a neural network from the male drosophila connectome, then trained it on human emotions. It was shocking to see how good it was at identification (better than some humans I know)

we gave our fruit fly brain damage (so you dont have to) we lesioned one neuron in our drosophila model and it starting misidentifying emotions. should we try this in people? @OrukLabs is building AI speech models that actually understand emotion/intent/delivery.
