Honestly I’ve hit my breaking point. On call this week and just crushed. It’s insanity to do a specialist consult on a complex patient in 20 minutes. If I take longer then urgent care is delayed and the pile gets bigger.
Now Sechelt hospital has no physician capacity and patients are being sent over to me in the night. For the first time in 22 years of medical practice I said no. It felt terrible because the patient gets caught in the middle.
It’s unsafe. It’s hurting me. It’s hurting my family. It’s hurting patients. Leadership at the highest level in the VCH health authority need to lead. I have dedicated 22 years to Lions gate hospital. I’m seriously contemplating resigning.
Whoever forms the next government needs to make people in highly paid positions in administration accountable. Done with mediocrity. Politicians can’t fix the system but they can demand accountability from those they hire in to these roles.

The medical world acts like we all have family or partners who can give rides, change bandages, etc.
Many of us don’t.
Most of the last years, I lived a continent away from family & had virtually no support. No system ever stepped in.
It makes a huge difference.
you were fortunate to have someone to drive you to this facility.
without a close caretaker--who really cares for us--it is near-impossible to deal with a health crisis.
US government blithely assumes, or pretends to assume, that every citizen is surrounded by a network of volunteer "caretakers." if you need to be driven to the hospital for tests & wait with you for hours for the results, OF COURSE there is someone. that's the pretense.
even AI will assume: "have someone spend the night with you to insure that you are all right."
