QUIET ADVICE I GOT FROM AN OLD NURSE THAT ALWAYS WORKS.
She worked 40 years. Saw everything. Said most people die of the habits they call "harmless."
What she actually told me:
1. Chew your aspirin if you ever think your heart's in trouble. Chewing gets it working three times faster than swallowing.
2. Drink a glass of water before coffee. Your blood thickened all night. Coffee doesn't fix that.
3. Walk after every meal, even ten minutes. It flattens the sugar spike before it happens.
4. Put your feet up for ten minutes at noon. Venous blood pools. Gravity is free medicine.
5. Breathe out longer than you breathe in. Four in, six out. It flips your body off the panic switch.
6. Don't lie flat when heartburn hits. Prop your head up. Gravity again, and it's free.
7. Sleep by ten, not midnight. The hours before midnight do repair the hours after can't.
Every single one is free.
That's why nobody's selling them to you.
8 THINGS AROUND YOU THAT RAISE YOUR CANCER RISK
Some of these are sitting in your kitchen and bathroom right now.
1. Processed meat
7. HPV
Human papillomavirus has more than 100 types. HPV 16 and 18 are the high-risk ones behind cervical cancer, still one of the top killers of Nigerian women. Almost everyone who has had sex has met some form of HPV.
The cervix sits deep inside, so cancer there goes unseen until it's late. Make sure the women in your life get screened with an HPV DNA test or Pap smear.
If you have daughters between 9 and 14, get them the HPV vaccine. It's free under Nigeria's routine immunisation programme.
8. Smoking in any form
Cigarette smoke carries about 7,000 chemicals, including cancer-causing ones that damage the DNA in your cells. It harms your mouth, throat and lungs, and even your bladder, an organ the smoke never touches directly.
Shisha is no safer. One session gives you more carbon monoxide and tar than a single cigarette, fruit flavours or not. Weed contains cancer-causing chemicals too.
The 70-year-old smoker who seems fine is the exception, not your plan.
These 8 don't guarantee cancer, but each one loads the risk. Get your hepatitis B test, store food properly, get screened, vaccinate your daughters, quit smoking and drinking, eat real food and lose the belly. Prevention starts before the diagnosis.
10 SIGNS YOUR KIDNEYS ARE STRUGGLING
Your kidneys work quietly every day, and they rarely complain loudly when they start failing.
1. Foamy urine that won't clear
9. Losing your appetite for days on end
Your favourite meal is in front of you, nothing upsetting has happened, and you still can't eat. When the appetite loss sticks around with no clear reason, your kidneys are one thing to check.
