Today's Charlie Hall Chase offers a £56,950 prize to the winner.
In 2009, it was £57,010.
Allowing for inflation, today's prize money would need to be £94,000
In real terms, the winner's prize money has declined by 40%
Tradition isn't keeping the prize unchanged for 20 years
Just donated what I would have won for my chosen charity @actnforchildren ❤️ ❤️ amazing cause 😘🙏🏽
Just found out that @MayaJama was supporting @actnforchildren
Thank you Maya, AFC (or NCH as it was) made all the difference in my life and I’m forever grateful 🙏 😍

I've always maintained that the opening of betting shops to accomodate FoBTs was a reckless business gamble.
FoBTs were dangerous and were always going to be restricted.
Yet racing knowingly climbed into the same bed.
The industry was opening betting shops just for FOBTs. It was a business gamble & you lost. Eggs and baskets. teapaw.org/BritBookmakers/status/…

This seems like a great time to reshare my favourite Sir Patrick Stewart performance, ‘What has the ECHR ever done for us?’ It’s just perfect in every possible way … including the ending 😂😂😂 RIP.

Patrick Stewart remembering the moment Hugh Jackman took his hand during a screening of Logan, as they both sat watching in tears.
A beautiful story about friendship, saying goodbye, and what these characters meant to the guys who played them.
Rest in peace, Sir Patrick Stewart.

Worth remembering that in the next few weeks @PFNicholls will become the most successful jumps trainer of all time as he passes Martin Pipe’s record of 3930 winners in Britain. He is also closing on the landmark total of 4,000 wins over jumps including French and Eire.

The reality about gambling.
Not an explosion.
Not a public health emergency.
Not a crisis.
Excluding the Lottery, it's the smallest share of UK household spending since records began in 1985.
Yet policy gets ever more restrictive and taxes ever higher, justified by a "crisis" the data doesn't show.
The real growth is in the black market, which overregulation and overtaxation are feeding.

The traditional parties have become so puritanical about betting that we are now reliant on the likes of Lowe and Farage to fight betting and racing's corner. Doesn't send a great message, by association, given the rest of their agenda.
Gambling is not evil, and a Restore Britain Government will reduce taxes on the industry.
Adults should be free to make their own choices about how they spend their own money - a wild thing for a political party to say, I know.
Britain has a successful gambling industry that supports local economies all over the country.
In my constituency alone we have horse racing, a greyhound stadium, plenty of arcades and more.
We should be encouraging responsible operators to thrive, not taxing them into dust.
Problem gambling is an issue and should be properly addressed. But punishing an entire industry, costing thousands of jobs, for the actions of a very small number is not the answer.
Restore Britain will back British gambling.

It is striking that the only politicians to call for lower taxes on the high street gambling industry are now essentially from the nationalist Right. Yet looking at the comments on his post, Lowe’s own supporters are unanimously in favour of *reducing* the industry’s presence in white, working class communities.
I remember when the @BetGameCouncil promoted this same culture war narrative about the working class during Michael Dugher’s disastrous tenure. This was not just irresponsible (as I wrote back then in an article for the Critic — thecritic.co.uk/dont-let-the… ) — but also misguided, as it assumes that British working class communities deserve nothing better than high street wastelands of vape shops, kebab shops, Turkish barbers and arcades.
Lowe talks about Great Yarmouth, where he is the MP. I know Yarmouth well, as my parents live nearby. He talks about the arcades and the local economy. But Rupert Lowe is not from Norfolk, he doesn’t know the town from back when it had a proper maritime economy, he doesn’t know how most Norfolk people hate the degradation and despondency that has taken hold of Yarmouth and other towns in the county. He might be the current MP, parachuted in because of current political circumstances, but he seems to have no positive or transformative vision for the community. And when it comes to the high street, his own supporters can see this lack of vision — and reject it.

The decision taken by the Chancellor of the Exchequer to increase the rate of Machines Games Duty (MGD) in betting shops to 25% will cost racing millions of pounds a year and threaten the future sustainability of our sport.

Good summary here by @shergar81
Another blow for racing: somewhere between £15m and £57m less funding on the way, thanks to the MGD rise.
And who benefits?
•AGCs, as betting shops close
•The black market, as the regulated market becomes less competitive
•Online casino, as customers keep migrating from racing to gaming
Once shop closures are counted, this may raise far less than the Treasury expects, possibly less net tax overall.
Campaigners sold higher MGD as tackling harm. The likely outcomes above suggest harm goes up, not down.

April 2027.
General Betting Duty = 15% to 25%
Machine Gaming Duty = 20% to 25%
The consequences of these actions will be very apparent in Q3 2027.

Whilst the general news isn't good with the way racing is currently configured, it could have been a lot worse. These need more work in some ways, but have been quickly calculated following today's announcements. The sponsorship is beyond the cuts already made.

A slightly increased Machine Games Duty to cover business rates relief for hospitality. A logical decision, on balance. It is good to see policy decisions designed to help high streets and small business.
With the MGD tax decision made, it is time to concentrate on the next stage: a comprehensive look at the case for a new Gambling Act. Work will now begin on this in earnest. We hope that industry lobbyists will finally understand the direction of travel, and start engaging constructively.
