The World Bank says Kenya could have saved up to Sh117 billion in the construction of the Mombasa–Nairobi SGR if it had matched Tanzania’s cost per kilometre. — Kenya’s SGR cost Sh988 million per km (diesel-powered), compared to Sh741 million per km in Tanzania (electrified) and Sh689 million per km in Ethiopia (electrified). (At least 30% of the extra cost is linked to governance challenges, including fraud and non-competitive) contracting.
