So yeah, just watched #GodzillaMinusZero aka #ゴジラ-0 in its UK Premiere at the BFI IMAX and I’m OVERWHELMED! #TakashiYamazaki definitely went much bigger delivering the most satisfying, epic, yet heartbreaking sequel featuring #Godzilla. Never a Godzilla film felt and looked so overwhelmingly devastating. Differently from #GodzillaMinusOne, the monsters and their destructive actions are way more prominent in the new instalment. And visually, #Ghidorah and #Godzilla reached their best forms yet. If the previous film was more like a war drama with #Godzilla in it, this one is a Kaiju feast, with an even more impressive VFX work than what we saw in the first. But the human aspect remains the why this series of Godzilla films works so much more than whatever we’ve seen before. You care about those human individuals and about everything they went through because of these monsters, and even when the monsters are front and center showcasing their full glory, it’s the characters on the ground you are still worrying about. Will they survive? Will their many kinds of sacrifices pay off? It’s a movie about living with wounds, fear & trauma - not overcoming or healing them, at best adapting your life to accommodate them as your new normal (sounds familiar?), for a nation still plagued by the scars left by the war, while the film uses two monsters as allegories of a nation caught in the middle of the Cold War tensions between the two superpowers U.S. and the USRR. The stakes are much higher this time around - and the American army much more involved, and some interesting ethical and moral questions are layered throughout the film - some clearly aimed at #Oppenheimer himself, but also at our masterminds of today: the fact that you could meddle with a power beyond your comprehension doesn’t mean you should. New life lessons of bravery, self donation, empathy, the worth of standing up for what you believe, but also the thirst for revenge, or the naivety of allowing yourself to engage in a selfish pursuit of a normal, happy life when the world around you is on the edge of complete collapse, really make us root even more for the characters - and suffer for them when things don’t quite go their way. All of that highlighted by an INCREDIBLE sound design and scores throughout this film, and really helping you to feel immersed in the feels of danger, desolation and powerlessness facing mass destruction. #GodzillaMinusZero succeeds in finding the delicate balance no Kaiju film could achieve before: being an epic monster film while also working as an epic human drama, without ever making us feel like any of those two sides are overstaying or taking away the spotlight from each other, or that we are getting too little from one at the expense of the other. It’s an incredible cinematic event for the biggest screen possible, while also repeating that deeply connection with the human characters we loved so much on the first one. Also, I loved that the film even found time to pay homage to all timers such as TITANIC. And I swear, when you watch this film, the impression you get is that it’s a 200M budgeted blockbuster. How they managed to pull those visuals off with a rumoured 15M budget I have absolute no idea. No movie released this year looks nearly as good or expensive-looking as this one. It’s just INSANE! To summarise, #GodzillaMinusZero is a triumph as a sequel which elevates the spectacle while never losing track of the human drama which conquered our hearts in the previous one. It’s a visual delight and an emotional saga, which offers deeper conversations to be unearthed once we manage to see beyond the allegorical creatures and events, that are not only about post-war Japan, but can easily find parallels in our own current world. One last thing… Akiko! #GodzillaMinusZero debuts in Japan TOMORROW, NOV 03, and in the U.S. on FRI NOV 06.
