Hell yeah.
Here’s another thing that will happen if BAAJA passes as is: “Valar Atomics aims to put 456 small nuclear reactors on more than 9,000 acres managed by the BLM near the town of Price…the plan also calls for a nuclear fuel production plant and storage for the radioactive waste.”

SCOOP: Senate permitting deal on the rocks after Trump administration targets a fourth offshore wind project, New England Wind. @SenWhitehouse tells my colleague @kelseytam “This is how you blow up a permitting deal.”

wow, agree!
This really gets at the heart of it: for the better part of a generation, the American people simply have not been getting the government they vote for—for better or for worse. This in particular has caused Republicans to adopt increasingly more extreme policy stances because they know they'll never be in a place where they're held accountable by voters. The filibuster protects them from that. Reforming the filibuster won't solve all of the problems in our government, but from reining in an out of control executive to placing a check on the imperial Supreme Court to actually passing legislation that will have a tangible impact on people's lives (without having to contort itself through the asinine reconciliation process), it will go a pretty long way!

We have already extracted more oil and gas than we can burn in our lifetimes and still have a habitable planet. The Labour Government is lying to us about the climate disaster. And this same energy secretary admitted earlier in the year this will do nothing to lower our bills.
Energy Secretary @Miatsf says Zack Polanski's criticism about the govt giving the green light to Jackdaw is "complete nonsense". The government claims they can still meet their climate objectives.

Blocking fossil fuel projects using a difficult permitting process, and hoping that reduces emissions, is not a good climate strategy. And speeding up permitting processes, and hoping that helps clean energy and reduces emissions that way, is also not a good climate strategy.

Maybe the BAAJA proponents should focus on persuading the Trump admin rather than fighting with enviros online?
SCOOP from POLITICO: A new Trump administration legal move filed late Tuesday targeting the New England Wind offshore wind project threatens to derail the bipartisan permitting reform deal. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse: “This is how you blow up a permitting deal.”

a good example of how the permitting bill would potentially help a data center come into operation… while reducing reliance on off-grid gas generation
In case you missed it, last week @jaeporeon wrote about the permitting reform bill, BAAJA, through the lens of Project Jupiter, the massive, controversial Open AI/Oracle data center proposal in New Mexico. heatmap.news/plus/the-fight/…

If the bill is good for climate, where is the modeling that shows substantial emissions reductions? There isn't any. So are we supposed to just take the word of a lobbyist with a history advocating for fracking? bipartisanpolicy.org/wp-cont…

Which is to say, of COURSE such a lobbyist thinks "all of the above energy" is good for the climate. Unfortunately the @IPCC_CH said in 2023 that we already had too much fossil fuel infrastructure to halt global heating at 2°C. That's the hard real of climate policymaking.

The riots in France have multiple complex economic and social causes, but I have to wonder whether the scorching hot summer contributed some to the discontent. In a country where most homes and businesses lack air conditioning, this last summer would have been insufferable.

Americans hate AI data centers, according to 13 different recent polls
Yikes - polling largely negative (and arguably worsening depending on poll) since March so 6+ months leading into midterms at national AND state level

wow that is real hutzpah to criticize someone else of taking funding from an oil fortune when the BTI takes funding from the Charles Koch network
At a certain point we can stop taking seriously accusations of corruption from a movement funded by tech billionaires and scions of 20th century oil and automobile fortunes.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), a progressive leader, expands on this, telling me he'll oppose Senate's permitting reform bill as written. He adds he'll "support" Nat Resources ranking member Rep. Jared Huffman's "work to get a bill that has high environmental and climate standards"
It would be tone deaf if Congress makes it easier to build data centers right after an election with bipartisan rage against shoving them down the throats of local communities.

The revision of the Clean Water Act is what I think Big Tech wants the most from BAAJA, because it would let data centers be built even if opponents could show that the centers' energy provisioning and operation would poison local waters. 1/2
These are the kinds of environmental questions states will no longer be able to address as they have if BAAJA passes. Whatever voluntary measures the bill imposes on projects to pay for grid updates, THIS is what Big Tech is worried about. THIS is why they want BAAJA to pass.
