Wait, there was no formal representation from bodies who represent doctors on the panel that wrote these guidelines? The BMA should have been at the front and centre of this. Looks like they need to bin these and start from scratch. @lengreview this is embarrassing.
Replying to @TheBMA
The proposed protocols, if enacted, would effectively enable the NHS to continue to dangerously use PAs. We are clear - PAs must not assess, diagnose, or manage undifferentiated patients in any healthcare setting. Read the proposals here: cdn.intelligencebank.com/eu/…

The consultation on clinical protocols for PAs to see undifferentiated patients is published below⤵️ These are loose and unrestrictive, raising safety concerns Worse, the burden of supervising falls on ST4s+ Doctors, reach out to your royal college and ask them to reject this.
The BMA has written to Professor Leng objecting to draft clinical protocols permitting physician assistants to see patients who have not been assessed by a doctor.

.@TheBMA @thomasdolphin, when are you planning on consulting members on the latest step in the Leng review? We've not heard anything yet. The closing date is fast approaching.

Today I learnt that saying only people with a medical degree should work on doctors’ rotas is an extreme, polarising view 👀 Which is weird because I always thought that should be blatant common sense… …or else what’s the point of medschool? 🤷‍♂️

King’s College ED openly states ACPs are equivalent to ST3 but I wonder if @RCEMpresident will address this with the same vigour and enthusiasm as that taken when commenting on the BMA’s collaborative article with @Telegraph.

It is NOT elitist to say ONLY doctors should practise medicine In the same way as it is not elitist to say; Only nurses should practise nursing Only dentists should practise dentistry Only physios should practisephysiotherapy It is literally doing the right degree for the job

The original post might be a parody account but NHS policy and workforce planning is shaped by people like this.
And yet when it’s your kid with a perfd appendix and 4 quadrant peritonitis their life is the only one that seems to matter.

The joke is on all of us. The patient doesn't receive the correct diagnosis. Pharmacy first pays out £17. The GP that can diagnose this is paid 30p a day for a patient. No wonder the country is so unproductive when the Government comes up with rubbish like this.
Skin …. it’s simple right…..right? Shingles? Folliculitis? Infected eczema? Molluscum Contagiosum? Bed bugs? Scabies? Impetigo? Insect bites? A starter of some simple cases🧐

Which short sighted person signed off on this decision? Your service is held on by a thread of good will and your response is to burn that last bridge?

No more dodgy graphs patting yourselves on the back @DHSCgovuk? Are you going to try blaming this on strikes as well? Incompetent.
The overall waiting list for planned NHS appointments and treatment in England rose by 60,000 to 7.33 million in July - the highest since October last year. The number waiting more than a year went up by more than 1,000 to nearly 9,000.

The practice of medicine is sometimes knowing what you don't know. That's when a doctor speaks to a specialist colleague. The only thing more dangerous that not understanding something, is not appreciating the gap in your knowledge. This is a serious risk @DHSCgovuk
26 yrs I have been doing this doctoring malarky. Headaches are HARD to assess and treat. Acne is actually pretty complicated too Otitis externa isn't as easy as it sounds Scabies can look like a lot of things I don't wish to disparage my pharmacist colleagues, but WTAF are DoH thinking?

It's ok. Maybe NHS England has put together some e-learning modules to replace a medical degree.

1) Which bit of the Urological system have you highlighted👇🏼? 2) If your pharmacists don’t know how a Shingles rash presents, why are they assessing & prescribing for patients👇🏼? 3/ Since when have your Sinuses been located at the end of your nose👇🏼? @NPA1921 @YvetteCooperMP

In GP - cases that presented as “simple” symptoms: “Tummy bug” ➡️ brain tumour “Runny nose” ➡️ sepsis in newborn “Bit of a headache” ➡️ meningitis “Just a little rash” ➡️ skin cancer I’ve been a doctor for 20 yrs - **Simple symptoms do NOT equal simple diagnoses** 🚩
We're making it quicker and easier for people to get the care they need, closer to home. From this autumn, participating pharmacies will be able to assess and treat five additional common conditions. Find out more: england.nhs.uk/2026/09/patie…

Hey @NTeesHpoolNHSFT this is irresponsible and a huge patient safety issue. How many patients will be harmed before you stop this?
'Equivalent level to a Consultant Radiologist' without medical degree, specialty training or FRCR is interesting.

Arrowe Park saying the quiet part out loud is a damning indictment of the scale of doctor replacement in the NHS. We're continuing to campaign and challenge this practice and calling for doctors' roles to be protected, patients to know who is treating them, and medical workforce shortages to be addressed properly. bmj.com/content/394/bmj-2026… @NHSE_WTE @NHSEmployers @DHSCgovuk @CareQualityComm

And yet thousands of nurses and doctors are locked out of work and training due to incompetent workforce planning from DHSC.
Thousands of nursing, midwifery and allied health professional students will no longer have to pay travel and accommodation costs upfront when sent on training placements around the country. Eligible students can now claim advance payments, easing pressure on their budgets.
